Woman reports assault at Knox College

A 20-year-old female Knox College student called campus security late Monday night after she was allegedly assaulted by an unidentified male.

Galesburg Police reports stated the woman was walking home from Sharvey G. Umbeck Science and Mathematics Center on South West Street when four young men began following her and yelling at her, although she could not understand what they were saying.

The four males surrounded her and one of them struck her on the left side of her face. The blow knocked her to the ground, and the four males left the scene. According to an informational email distributed by the Knox College Office of Campus Security, the four did not attempt to rob the student.

The victim then got up and continued walking to her dorm. She called a friend to meet her outside but when she arrived, the men had fled.

She told officers she did not believe the men attended Knox College, police reports stated. She said they were wearing dark clothing, but could not recall any identifiers because the incident happened quickly.

The informational email was sent to all Knox students, faculty and staff roughly 90 minutes after the incident occurred.

Knox College Director of Campus Security John Schlaf said his office is coordinating the investigation of the incident with the Galesburg Police Department.

?The informational email did generate some information from several witnesses and we have followed up on that information,? Schlaf said. ?We are pleased with the efforts of our students to help out and stay informed of the incident.?

Police reports stated that security officers reviewed some camera footage but could not observe anything related to the incident. Officers will continue to review additional footage.

There are no suspects as of press deadline.

The Galesburg Police Department said Knox College is heading up the investigation, and police will provide added patrols around the area where the assault allegedly took place.
