Gerard Depardieu has been granted a Russian citizenship, according to a statement on the Kremlin website.?
Bypassing traditional routes, the actor was offered Russian citizenship by the President himself in December 2012, stating ?if he?d like to have a Russian passport, consider it settled?.
This offer follows an open letter by Gerard Depardieu, which stated that he would turn over his passport and French social security card (and therefore his citizenship) following recent tax changes in his home country. According to French legislation, a person cannot be stateless, and must have another citizenship if they are going to revoke their citizenship.
The actor has publicly spoken out against France?s new tax initiatives, which will tax the highest earners at over 75% if they earn more than 1 million Euros per year. By contrast, Russia has a flat income tax of 13%, payable by all citizens.
Depardieu?s representatives have not commented regarding the offer, and declined to say whether the actor has accepted or declined.
Considering the lengthy time and paperwork that a visa or citizenship application usually entails, it?s a situation where it certainly pays to be described as a ?successful businessman and friend? by the President.?
