'Erro. Welcome to the OOC section for Hotel Kastros. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll answer them as best I can, with as much as I'm permitted to give away.

Reservations last for 48 hours. If you fail to put up a CS in that time the role will be opened up. We will wait until all the roles have been filled before we begin roleplaying.

Also, this happens quite a lot and it annoys me. If you're swamped with other roleplays, don't reserve a character here and then put 'Sorry, I'm so busy with other roleplays right now, I can't join' a day or two later. It's not cool.

I hope you all enjoy the roleplay and feel welcome here.

How do you get a GIF??
I also considering putting in a CS for Worker 3.

May I please reserve Guest#3? I assume that I have until then to choose a face claim.

@tezza Tumblr would probably be your biggest friend, just search up the person your looking for gifs for.

It?s kind of ridiculous that we have to work our asses off for 13 years in school, just to work our asses off for another 2-8+ years in college, just to work our asses off in a job that we probably don?t even like, when we were born on this earth without a choice and I for one certainly didn?t sign up for that

@Stark Contrast
I'm using Megan Fox. I've found a picture, black and white, but I don't know how to insert it in the CS.

Here's the code for images, and in case you want more, just go to Tumblr, and search Megan Fox gifs, I'm sure you can find plenty.

OKAY, there, Ive said it. You want individuals to come to your site to see what you have or to finance the method at publishers if you?re an Internet publisher. If you are a web business you want to develop a comprehensive opt-in ezine that presents compelling information that consequently results in income from an educated client base. When an ezine manager pushes? The principal purpose of a digital journal (ezine) would be to market an item or service. OKAY, there, Ive said it. You want individuals to come to your website to see what you have or to finance the method at advertisers if you?re an Internet author. If you?re an online business you wish to produce a comprehensive opt-in ezine that gifts compelling data that consequently results in sales from an educated client base. When an ezine publisher presses way too hard or assumes practices which are less than trustworthy the result is a reputation of being a spammer. Among the first questions any online business should ask themselves is The Reason Why should I create a business ezine? you want to give it a whirl and if the answer is merely because its a device you might want to change your answer. Creating an ezine may be labor-intensive correlate with a distinct goal. You have to know what the intention of the ezine is likely to be before things can be really got by you moving. You will likely think it is better received among your opt-in list if you can develop a plan for your ezine. Business people can frequently incorrectly assume that they should develop an ezine for marketing purposes and just send whatever data hits them at any given moment. You?ll likely find consumers that opt-in will opt-out quickly if that?s your strategy. Because you comprehend the value of time it is equally important to regard the value of the time your client-base might spend with your ezine. Point and the more planning to the ezine the better it will be obtained. Look at it in this way, if you?ve 1,000 encouraged customers on a list that has 5,000 and each individual spends five minutes studying the material you deliver, the accumulated time your customers spend along with your ezine is simply more than 83 hours or about 3 (24 hour) times. If you send a weekly ezine you?ll likely find your customers paying almost 50% of the year reading your material. To put it requires that in perspective your kids will not be in school as long motivated your material to be collectively read by customers. If your web visitors are going to spend that much time reading your ezine you can do a minimum of make sure it?s worth reading. Build your own personal material, but dont forget to use material from other professionals. This information can be obtained through your suppliers and can also be obtained through the usage of free-to-use articles on numerous sites. mlm mentor

Obama: Gun-control advocates have to listen more

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says gun-control advocates have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes in the debate over firearms in America.

In an interview with The New Republic, Obama says he has "a profound respect" for the tradition of hunting that dates back for generations.

"And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake. Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas," he says.

Obama has called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and is pushing other policies following the mass shooting last month at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. In response, gun-rights advocates have accused Obama and others of ignoring the Second Amendment rights of Americans.

The president says it's understandable that people are protective of their family traditions when it comes to hunting.

"So it's trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes," he says.

Has Obama himself ever fired a gun?

"Yes," the president says, "in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time."

His daughters don't shoot skeet at the presidential retreat in Maryland, he adds, "but oftentimes guests of mine go up there."

The interview appears in the Feb. 11 issue of The New Republic.

Yamaha CD Player Pulls Double Duty with Web Access - CE Pro ...

Yamaha's latest product, the new CD-N500 plays CDs and digital files stored on a network, tablet, smart phone, portable hard drive or NAS. The player is also capable of streaming Internet radio to provide homeowners with an all-in-one music solution.

Recent data from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) indicates that sales of CDs have fallen, but sales of downloadable music have increased over the past several years.

Yamaha?s new CD-N500 Network CD player is a solution that electronics professionals can use to bridge the evolution from physical media to downloadable and streaming media without sacrificing sound quality. This all-in-one component is engineered to allow music lovers the ability to play their existing CD collections, as well as music stored on their computers, NAS units, portable hard drives, tablets, smart phones and other devices. The player also includes the ability to stream Internet radio.

?While most consumers have moved to accessing music via iTunes, music streaming and Internet radio there are still many passionate digital music fans who also have large CD libraries that remain an important part of their entertainment experience,? explains Tom Sumner, senior vice president, Yamaha Corporation of America. ?The CD-N500 is a perfect transition piece for this audience, since it enables them to better integrate all desired music sources. They can listen to what they want when they want as our network CD player eliminates the barriers to identifying and enjoying their favorite artists and songs.?

The CD and network music player features a front panel USB input that provides hard drive, computer, smart phone connectivity, and Yamaha says the unit also incorporates support for the vTuner radio station database. Yamaha adds the CD-N500 can playback a variety of digital files, including high-resolution 24-bit/192kHz FLAC files and files encoded in Apple?s popular Apple Lossless format.

Yamaha points out that it engineered the CD-N500 with its left-right symmetrical audio circuitry to utilize the shortest possible circuit path to maintain the best signal integrity, and the player also incorporates 32-bit/192kHz Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converters (DACs).

To further support its adoption by homeowners, Yamaha also offers Apple iOS, Android and Kindle control apps, and it says that audiophiles can operate the CD-N500?s Pure Direct mode to ensure the highest quality output signal.

BitTorrent working on file-sync app: sounds like Dropbox, calls itself Sync

BitTorrent working on filesync app sounds like Dropbox, calls itself Sync

BitTorrent has announced that it's working on its very own file-synchronization app -- and it's already looking for a limited number of test subjects for its pre-Alpha stage. So far, the premise is to offer identical copies of your files on all machines, all sounding pretty similar to how you use iCloud, Skydrive or Dropbox, although there would be no cloud-caching. According to GigaOM, files will be protected by 256-bit encryption, with native test apps for Mac, Windows and Linux (alongside NAS integration) already in testing. There's no mobile version just yet, but BitTorrent has stated that it's "committed to mobile across the board," and, well, it's still pre-Alpha. If you're up for trying another file sync service, the company is recruiting willing participants over at the source.

Twitter ordered to ID anti-Semitic tweeters

2 hrs.

PARIS ???A French court on Thursday ordered Twitter to help identify the authors of anti-Semitic posts or face fines of the?equivalent?of?$1,300?a?day, as the social network firm comes under renewed pressure to combat racist and extremist messages.?

The order, requested by a Jewish student union and rights groups, concerned anti-Semitic material but could open the floodgates to legal pursuit of Twitter users who post a wide range of messages deemed illegal or offensive.?

"This is an excellent decision, which we hope will bring an end to the feeling of impunity that fuels the worst excesses," said Stephane Lilti, lawyer for the groups who sought the ruling.?

The anti-Semitic messages started appearing last October, and have since been deleted.?

The Paris court gave privately?held Twitter, whose general policy is that it does not control content posted on its network, 15 days to hand over data identifying people who have published messages judged anti-Semitic.?

The court also ordered Twitter to set up a system in France that helps people draw attention to illegal content. Under French law, people found guilty of inciting racial hatred can be jailed for a year and fined.?

Twitter's lawyer in France, Alexandra Neri, declined to comment.?

Failure to comply would expose the firm, founded in 2006 and now boasting 140 million monthly active users worldwide, to daily fines of 1,000 euros if the groups who sought the order request it, which Lilti said they would not hesitate to do.?

A rights group involved in the case was quick to point out that the injunction, while limited to a case of anti-Semitic traffic, set a precedent that could also have a wider impact.?

"This marks a decisive step forward in the battle against racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic offences on the Internet," the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism (LICRA) said in a statement.?

"Nobody can ignore French law, not even the giants of the American digital economy."?

For a first time, Twitter deployed a new message-blocker in Germany last October to jam the posting of messages by a neo-Nazi group banned by police.?

A tool Twitter calls "country withheld content" allows it to censor tweets considered illegal in a given country.?

Japan envoy says territory dispute with China can be resolved

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Japanese envoy to Beijing said on Friday that he believed tensions with China over a group of uninhabited islands could be resolved, after meeting China's president-in-waiting Xi Jinping.

Natsuo Yamaguchi, head of New Komeito, the junior partner in Japan's ruling coalition, said Japan will look at the "big picture" in dialogue to resolve territorial disputes with China. He said he did not directly discuss the islands issue with Xi.

He also said he delivered a letter to Xi from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Tensions over the islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, have flared in recent months, dragging down bilateral ties.

NY Post's Clinton cover: 'No Wonder Bill's Afraid'

Thursday's New York Post cover.

The New York Post took an interesting approach to Hillary Clinton's congressional testimony on the attack in Benghazi, blasting a photo of the secretary of state with fists clenched alongside a headline that screams, "No Wonder Bill's Afraid."

We're not sure what former President Bill Clinton has to do with Clinton's testimony, but the Post features his photo in the corner of the arguably sexist cover, as well. His face appears beside the words: "The lady has some temper! Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton came out breathing fire yesterday at a congressional hearing where pols ripped her handling of the Benghazi debacle."

On Wednesday, Clinton raised her voice and banged her fists against the table for emphasis after Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin questioned her aggressively about the department's actions following the killing of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012. Republicans have criticized the Obama administration for at first suggesting that the attack could have been borne out of a spontaneous protest sparked by an anti-Islam video.

"With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans," Clinton responded, suggesting that Johnson was focused on unimportant semantics. "Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk last night who decided to go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator."

During the hearing Clinton was also questioned as to why requests for more security at the complex were ignored by midlevel State Department officials, among other things.

Dung beetles steer by the Milky Way

Planetarium experiments show that the insects need only starlight to orient themselves

Planetarium experiments show that the insects need only starlight to orient themselves

LOST IN SPACE

Researchers fitted dung beetles with tiny blinders for experiments showing that the feces-eating insects can use the Milky Way to navigate.

Credit: Marcus Byrne

Even a collector of animal waste can keep its eyes on the stars. By tracking the dung beetles skittering across a darkened planetarium, researchers have shown that like seals, birds and people, the feces-eating insects are capable of celestial navigation.

?This is the first time we have shown that insects can use stars to guide them for orientation,? says neuroethologist Marie Dacke of Lund University in Sweden, ?and it?s also the very first proof that animals can use the Milky Way for their orientation.? She and her colleagues report the results January 23 in Current Biology.

Dung-rolling insects are excellent for studying navigation because they collect their prized food source and single-mindedly roll it as directly as possible away from competitors and predators. Putting the beetles in weird get-ups during experiments doesn?t deter them. ?They are so attached to their dung balls,? Dacke says, ?that under all circumstances they just want to roll the ball in a straight line.?

Earlier work showed that beetles can orient using the sun and moon as beacons or by the patterns of polarization in sunlight and moonlight. Beetles don?t use landmarks like rocks and trees ? or, scientists thought, starlight.

That conclusion came from a 2003 publication by Dacke herself, among other researchers. In that work, she and her colleagues had reported that beetles lost their sense of direction if they could see the stars but not the moon. So she was mystified years later, when she observed beetles under starlight in a different experiment and found that they weren?t lost at all.

To figure out why, the researchers performed outdoor experiments blocking the insects? view of the heavens with caps or using high-walled arenas that allowed them to see nothing but sky. The beetles could orient themselves when they could see the sky but not when they could see terrestrial landmarks.

Testing fully whether beetles orient by starlight would require turning the stars on and off, so Dacke and her colleagues borrowed the Johannesburg planetarium. With the planetarium dome darkened, the nocturnal dung beetle Scarabaeus satyrus fumbled and curlicued around. But showing just the Milky Way let the beetles kick along balls of dung in fairly direct paths.

Knowing that the dung beetles actually can orient by stars, Dacke realized why her earlier experiment had gone wrong: She had tested the beetles in October in South Africa, when the Milky Way was so low in the sky that the animals couldn?t get a good view.

The beetle doesn?t steer by the Milky Way with the same understanding that a person does, says Paul Graham of the University of Sussex in England. Rather, he says, the blur of stars is a stable feature for orientation. Since the beetles only need to move quickly away from the original dung deposit, any visual cues would work. Nocturnal dung beetles, he says, are a lovely example of an animal?s adapting to its environment ? and to its universe.

?Adaptation of an Animal: Opposable thumbs are an adaptation in humans which allow them to grip objects, as demonstrated here.
?Adaptation of a Plant: ?The apple tree has adapted to produce fruit, namely apples. ?By producing apples, animals will eat its seed an help it to reproduce.
?Amniotic Egg: ?This egg is an excellent example of...an egg! ?Amniotic eggs allow animals to live and reproduce on land, while previously they had to be in the water.
?Angiosperm: ?An angiosperm is characterized by its production of flowers. ?Angiosperms also produce endosperm in their seeds, and their seeds are contained in fruits.
?Arachnid: ?A spider (an arachnid) made the web seen in this picture. ?All arachnids have eight legs and they include spiders, scorpions, and ticks.
?Arthropod: ?This pillbug/isopod/roly-poly is an arthropod. ?Arthropods are the phylum containing animals with exoskeletons, jointed appendages, and segmented bodies. ?Insects, arachnids, and crustaceans are some of the arthropods.
?Bilateral Symmetry: ?When both halves of something look identical. ?In nature this would occur with organisms, rather than clocks, but you get the point.
?Artificial Selection: ?This grapefruit was selected because of its large size. ?Therefore, humans have selected the trait for big grapefruits, and perhaps pass it along to future generations.
?Deuterostome: ?There is actually a bird in this tree, but if I told you were it is, that would be too easy. ?A deuterostome is an animal whose first body cavity in embryonic development becomes its anus. ?Sea urchins, sea stars, and all vertebrates are some examples of deuterostomes.
?Fungi: ?Fungi are in a seperate kingdom from plants and animals. ?One characteristic of fungi is that their cell walls contain chitin, rather than cellulose, as in plants. ?Some examples of fungi are yeast, molds, and mushrooms, as in the picture.
?Gymnosperm leaf: ?Gymnosperms are seed producing plants that differ from angiosperms in that rather than producing flowers and fruit, they simply produce seeds and cones. ?Conifers and cycads are gymnosperms.
?Lichen: ?Lichen usually consists of a fungus and an algae living together in a symbiotic relationship. ?Lichens can be found in some of the most extreme environments on Earth.
?Mycorrhizal fungi: ?Mycorrhiza is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and a terrestrial plant. ?The majority of plants are in such a relationship, and therefore I am guessing that this tree is in a mycorrhizal relationship with a mycorrhizal fungus.

?Organisms in different plant divisions: 1) fern ?Pteridophyta?2) moss Bryophyta 3) palm Cycadophyta 4) flowering plant Anthophyta. ?Plant divisions are the phyla of plants, which is the next level of organization below kingdom.
?Seedless vascular plant: ?A seedless vascular plants is alike to any other vascular plant except that it does not produce seeds (shocking). ?Instead it reproduces via spores.
?Tetrapod: ?These tracks were made by a dog, which is a tetrapod. ?A tetrapod is any four-limbed animal, such as a frog, lizard, dog, mouse, or eagle.
Unicellular organism: ?This bread was made in part by yeast, which is a unicellular organism, meaning it consists of a single cell.

Morning Markets January 24 - Business Insider

UPDATE:

What's interesting is that markets have mostly recovered from earlier, when things were in the red.

Apple will be a big drag on the NASDAQ today, and the S&P to some extent.

But markets are mostly ho-hom at this point, and Europe has gone from red to slightly positive.

EARLIER: The big story today, obviously, will be the Apple earnings debacle, which caused the stock to fall more than 10% after hours last night.

NASDAQ futures are going to get hammered, as the stock has such a big weighting in that index.

The question is whether Apple spreads elsewhere.

There may not be much of a reason to worry, as Apple went from $700 to $500, while the overall market made new high after new high.

Europe is down modestly across the board. Italy, for example, is down 0.35%.

Asia had a big night after China's Flash PMI hit a 24-month high.

BMW i3 Electric Car: Motorcycle Engine Range-Extender For 250 ...

If you're a fan of electric cars, there's a fair chance BMW's i3 urban electric car is one of the vehicles you're most looking forward to in 2013.

When it goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2013, it's set to be one of the most advanced vehicles on the road--not least for its lightweight carbon-fiber reinforced plastic chassis.

BMW is also releasing further details on the range-extended option for the i3, allowing drivers just that little extra range for longer trips.

The company hinted a while back that the gasoline-aided version of the i3 would use a twin-cylinder motorcycle engine.

The tiny unit, expected to be an inline-twin of around 600cc, will have no mechanical connection to the wheels, and will be used to turn a generator, extending the car's range once the battery has reached a lower limit.

Automotive News reports the car's range is expected to be around 250 miles, including the 60-90 miles possible on the car's battery pack. It'll lie under the rear deck, in the same compartment as the car's electric drive motor.

If 250 miles doesn't sound like a lot, then that's still more than most owners are likely to need, according to BMW.

"I imagine many buyers will order the range extender to cure their range anxiety, discovering later they need it very seldom," said BMW R&D cheif Herbert Diess.

Drivers of the Chevrolet Volt, another range-extended electric vehicle, will no doubt agree--63 percent of miles traveled by Volt drivers are on electric power alone--despite an all-electric range around the 40-mile mark.

The BMW's range-extender is unlikely to be a straight carry-over from one of the company's motorcycles, however.

Due to strict targets for noise, vibration and harshness, it's likely that BMW will heavily modify the engine for its intended purpose, and optimize it for the constant speeds needed for optimum efficiency.

BMW hasn't yet revealed pricing for the i3 or range-extended i3, but both will appear on sale together at the end of 2013.

Green Blog: Taking a Harder Look at Fracking and Health

PHILADELPHIA ? A coalition of academic researchers in the United States is preparing to shine a rigorous scientific light on the polarized and often emotional debate over whether fracking for natural gas is hazardous to human health.

Some five years after the controversial combination of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling in the gas-rich Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania and surrounding states got under way, a team of toxicologists from the University of Pennsylvania is leading a national effort to study the health effects of fracking.

The university?s Center for Excellence in Environmental Toxicology has organized a working group with researchers at other top universities including Columbia, Johns Hopkins and the University of North Carolina to investigate and analyze reports of nausea, headaches, breathing difficulties and other ills from people who live near gas drilling sites, compressor stations or waste-water pits.

The aim is to bring academic discipline to the unresolved national debate, which pits an industry that denies any link between fracking and environmental contamination against those who assert that fracking poisons air and water with natural and man-made chemicals that can cause cancer, birth defects and other illnesses.

?There is an enormous amount of rhetoric on both sides,? said Trevor Penning, head of the Penn toxicology center and the driving force behind the Environmental Health Sciences Core Center Hydrofracking Working Group. ?We felt that because we are situated in Pennsylvania, we had a duty to get on top of what was known and what was not known.?

Dr. Penning has asked 17 centers affiliated with the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences to take part in different aspects of research into the health effects of fracking. Ten have so far accepted, he said in an interview.

Among the questions to be answered, Dr. Penning said, is the toxicity of the ?flowback? water that emerges from gas wells after they are fracked, which contains a mix of man-made and naturally occurring chemicals. Fracking forces a mixture of water, sand and chemicals at high pressure a mile or more underground to facture the shale and release the natural gas ? mainly methane ?inside it.

Determining whether flowback water or fracking fluid is dangerous to health is challenging if the chemicals and their combinations are not fully disclosed, he said. The teams will also look at whether air quality is dangerously affected by the flaring of waste gases, and whether the industry?s extensive use of diesel fuel for trucks, drills and compressor stations is polluting the air to unhealthy levels near gas installations.

?We don?t know if the levels we are dealing with are hazardous,? he said. ?We think it?s unsafe, but we don?t know it?s unsafe.?

The first project, based on work at Penn, surveyed residents in the Marcellus Shale regions of Pennsylvania about their health symptoms and whether they believed their symptoms were related to local gas drilling. Results are expected to be published in mid-February.

Future projects, which depend on obtaining financing from the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, would include working with a cancer center at the University of Texas to compare the heavily drilled Barnett Shale in that state with the Marcellus and to see whether state laws on gas drilling have taken public health into consideration.

Also awaiting funds is a plan to use a Harvard University mapping tool to correlate gas installations with reports of sickness and a proposal to study the health outcomes of targeted populations by examining billing data from insurance companies.

Dr. Penning said the planned research projects won?t duplicate the ongoing work of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, which is conducting its own research into whether fracking contaminates water supplies. That study is not explicitly focused on the health effects of any contamination, he said.

Asked why academics are only now proposing a systematic study of fracking?s health effects some five years after the shale boom began in earnest in Pennsylvania, Dr. Penning replied, ?Politics.?

With a strongly pro-industry administration led by Pennsylvania?s Republican governor, Tom Corbett, and a Republican-controlled legislature that has recently approved an industry-friendly gas-drilling law, state funding has not been available for research into whether the industry?s activities have negative health effects, Dr. Penning said.

?Academia can only do work if there?s funding to do that work,? he said.

The projects may guide industry and government worldwide in developing shale gas reserves, whch are expected to become a major global energy source.

?The Marcellus Shale is a microcosm of what?s going on across the globe,? Dr. Penning said.

Research explores 12,000 year fossil record

The western Antarctic Peninsula is one of the fastest warming regions on the planet, and the fastest warming part of the Southern Hemisphere.

Scientists have debated the causes of this warming, particularly in light of recent instrumental records of both atmospheric and oceanic warming from the region. As the atmosphere and ocean warm, so the ice sheet (holding an equivalent of 5 metres of global sea level rise, locked up in ice) becomes vulnerable to collapse.

Now research led by Cardiff University published in Nature Geoscience has used a unique 12,000 year long record from microscopic marine algae fossils to trace glacial ice entering the ocean along the western Antarctic Peninsula.

The study has found that the atmosphere had a more significant impact on warming along the western Antarctic Peninsula than oceanic circulation in the late Holocene (from 3500-250 years ago).

This was not the case prior to 3500 years ago, and is not the case in the modern environment. The study has also shown that this late Holocene atmospheric warming was cyclic (400-500 year long cycles) and linked to the increasing strength of the El Nio Southern Oscillation phenomenon (a climate pattern centred in the low latitude Pacific Ocean) demonstrating an equatorial influence on high latitude climate.

Dr Jennifer Pike, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences said: "Our research is helping to understand the past dynamic behaviour of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet. The implications of our findings are that the modern observations of ocean-driven warming along the western Antarctic Peninsula need to be considered as part of a natural centennial timescale cycle of climate variability, and that in order to understand climate change along the Antarctic Peninsula, we need to understand the broader climate connections with the rest of the planet."

Ice derived from land has a very distinctive ratio of oxygen isotopes. This research is the highest resolution application in coastal Antarctic marine sediments of a technique to measure the oxygen isotope ratios of microscopic marine algae fossils (diatom silica). When a large amount of glacial ice is discharged into the coastal ocean, this alters the oxygen isotope ratio of the sea water that the marine algae are living in. This creates a clear imprint in the fossils that reveals the environmental conditions of the time. The scientists used the oxygen isotope ratio of the fossils to reconstruct the amount of glacial ice entering the coastal ocean in the past 12,000 years, and to determine whether the variations in the amount of ice being discharged were the result of changes in the ocean or atmospheric environment.

Professor Melanie Leng, from the British Geological Survey and Chair of Isotope Geosciences in the Department of Geology, University of Leicester, said: "Technologically the analysis of the oxygen isotope composition of diatom silica is extremely difficult, the British Geological Survey is one of a very few research organisations in the world that can undertake this type of analysis. For this research project the methodology has been developed over the last five years with the specific aim of investigating the different amounts of melting in the polar regions. It's fair to say we are world leading pioneers in this technique."

###

The research is co-authored with Cardiff University by the universities of Nottingham, Leicester and the British Geological Survey and was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

Samsung keeps lagging in the Windows Phone race

Samsung Windows Phone 8 SalesSamsung

It could be that Samsung (005930) simply does not care, but the world?s biggest smartphone brand is off to a notably weak start in the Windows Phone 8 race. On a British website tracking handset sales across all UK carriers, Nokia?s (NOK) Lumia 920 is at No.5 and the Lumia 820 is at No.10. Samsung?s ATIV S does not crack the top-10 list.

[More from BGR: BlackBerry 10 OS walkthrough, BlackBerry Z10 pricing]

At Expansys UK, the black Lumia 920 holds the top spot on the best-seller list and the yellow Lumia 920 is on the pre-order list; there are no Samsung Windows Phone models on the best-seller list, while the gray ATIV S is at No.8 on pre-order list.

[More from BGR: BlackBerry Z10 compared to iPhone 5 on camera [video]]

At Expansys Germany, there are three Lumia models ahead of the ATIV S. Even at Expansys France, several Nokia or HTC (2498) models trump the ATIV S on best-seller and pre-order lists. Samsung?s brand has been stronger in France than in the UK or Germany over the past couple of years.

Two Lumias made it to?Dial A Phone?s?most popular list, but the ATIV S does not. Lumias also trump the ATIV S on the most popular phone lists from?Phonehouse Germany and UK. The big British site Phones 4 U splashes two Lumias on its front page list of eight contract models ? no ATIV S in sight.

Samsung clearly had a slower start in Windows Phone 8 market, with Nokia rolling out the Lumia 920 in November and HTC getting its budget phone, the Windows Phone 8S, out by the third week of December. But it?s striking that in the third week of January, Samsung still appears to lag behind Lumia models and in many cases HTC?s Windows range. Usually, newer launches tend to pop in the sales charts at least for a couple of weeks; and Samsung typically gets its models strong placement in Europe?s leading handset retail websites.

It is possible that Samsung simply wants to prioritize the hot Galaxy S III and Note II models; and these two are being promoted strongly by European carriers and retailers. Regardless of the reason why, the ATIV S? surprisingly weak showing seems to be giving Nokia and HTC room to exploit the marketing support that carriers are allocating to Windows Phone 8.

You should have bought a used Chevy pick up. Why would you buy a daily driver with a classy interior if you work construction?

Obviously you don't want nice leather seats if you're planning to cover them with imitation covers. You could have chosen any other interior fabric and covered them in imitation leather and had the same results.

Not trying to be rude but you make no sense.

I guess I just don't think owning leather and covering it to protect it is a dumb idea...its still much comfyer than a standard seat and heated is still heated and ill Stoll see and feel leather just not risk hurting it.
