Garza informed he'll likely be dealt: Texas, Indians, Red Sox, Cards in mix

Trade target Matt Garza likely won't be wearing the Cubs' colors much longer. (USATSI)
Cubs star right-hander Matt Garza, who separated himself as the top available starting pitcher with a string of impressive recent outings, has received notice that he will likely be traded after contract talks didn't produce an extension. Garza is drawing interest from the Rangers, Indians, Red Sox and Cardinals, among others.
Texas and Cleveland seem to be clear players while Boston's interest might depend somewhat on when star Clay Buchholz returns from injury, which is unclear. Others believe St. Louis is a stealth player in the derby for the red-hot right-hander.
Danny Knobler
Marlins may hold on to Stanton awhile Just about every contender has checked in on Garza at some point, as he is the lone No. 1 or 2 type pitcher on the block. He is particularly appealing since he is battled-tested in the AL East, from back in his Rays days.
The Cubs, clearly convinced he is past the elbow issue that sidelined him the last few months of last season and the beginning of this year, broached the possibility of an extension, as reported here first, but sources suggest there was a difference of opinion over the AAV (average annual value) on the deal, not surprising in that star players rarely sign within three months of free agency. Garza has raised his stock both in terms of his eventual salary and also the trade market, going 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA over his past six starts.
Texas is getting strong performances in its rotation lately from Martin Perez to go along with Derek Holland, and it is expected that Yu Darvish and Alexi Ogando will be back soon. But there's still uncertainty regarding the timing of the returns of Colby Lewis and Matt Harrison, leaving Texas dependent lately on several young starters. The Rangers have used 23 pitchers overall and have seven hurlers on the disabled list.
The Indians are satisfied with their depth but seek to add a top-of-the-rotation starter, a tall order in this market, especially since Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo isn't pitching to his past performance. The Red Sox are said to be concentrating on the pen even after adding lefty Matt Thornton, but Buchholz's health could determine their eventual focus.
St. Louis wouldn't seem to have a major need in the rotation, but Garza would upgrade any team, even better ones. Toronto has been speculated as a possible suitor, but there is little to no evidence they are actively involved, at least not at the moment.
The Orioles, never really in the Garza derby, were obviously out once they settled for the Cubs' Scott Feldman. The Padres, Giants and Rockies looked like early possibilities, but San Francisco and Colorado might be evaluating whether to buy and San Diego looks like a probable seller.
The Diamondbacks are looking at starters, but reports have suggested they might prefer pitchers under team control through 2014, at least. The Dodgers appear to be focusing on bullpen help after adding Ricky Nolasco early, but they should probably never be counted out of anything considering their aggressive style.

Future President Jimmy Carter marries

On this day in 1946, James Earl "Jimmy" Carter marries Eleanor Rosalynn Smith at the Plains Methodist Church in Plains, Georgia. When the couple met, she was 18 and working in a hair salon. He was 21 and a recent graduate of the Annapolis Naval Academy.

During the first seven years of their marriage, Jimmy and Rosalynn, as she was called, lived in a variety of places, as he was given different assignments with the Navy. Though he had hoped to make the Navy his career, his plans changed when his father died in 1953. Jimmy took over the family peanut farm in Plains, Georgia, while Rosalynn ran the financial end of the business and raised the couple's four children. She supported her husband's first two failed political campaigns--for state senator in 1962 and for governor in 1966-- and shared in his success in 1970 when he won the governor's race. The couple moved to Atlanta and, as Georgia's first lady, Rosalynn began a lifelong commitment to improving services for the mentally ill.

When Carter won the presidency in 1976, Rosalynn took advantage of her position to advocate for new legislation to protect the rights of the mentally ill, senior citizens and women. She even traveled as Carter's representative to meetings in Central and South America and liaised with policy leaders on issues such as human rights, arms reduction and trade. She set up an office in the East Wing of the White House, from which she conducted White House business and her own personal projects. Both she and her husband projected a casual profile of accessibility during his term in the White House. Carter liked to wear cardigan sweaters instead of suits while at work and he and Rosalynn eschewed the traditional limousine ride from the Capitol to the White House in favor of walking at his inauguration. Although they presented a low-key, down-to-earth image, the couple kept up busy schedules and rarely took vacations. Still, they managed to arrange to regularly meet for meals with their young daughter Amy in the White House residential quarters.

By 1980, Carter had become embroiled in the Iranian hostage crisis and was struggling to lead the nation out of an ongoing energy crisis complicated by high inflation. As he chose not to spend too much time away from the White House to pursue a second presidential campaign, Rosalynn stepped in and appeared at many campaign rallies on his behalf. Although Carter failed to win a second term, losing to Ronald Reagan, he and Rosalynn stayed active in national and international affairs. In 1982, they founded the Carter Center in Atlanta to advocate for human rights and to alleviate "unnecessary human suffering" around the world. Since 1984, the Carters have given their time each year to build homes and raise awareness of homelessness with the international charitable organization Habitat for Humanity.

In 2002, Carter won the prestigious Nobel Prize for his efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights and to promote economic and social development. The couple currently lives in Plains, Georgia, where former President Carter can sometimes be found teaching a Sunday School class at Maranatha Baptist Church.

Britain to deport radical cleric Abu Qatada on Sunday -papers

LONDON (Reuters) - Radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada will be deported by Britain to Jordan on Sunday, ending eight years of government efforts to send him home for trial, British papers reported on Saturday.

Abu Qatada, wanted in Jordan on charges of alleged terrorism, will be put on a special flight at around 01:00 GMT (02:00 a.m.), the Times newspaper said. Observers from a Jordanian human rights organisation would accompany him, the Telegraph said.

A spokeswoman for the Home Office declined to comment on the reports.

Once described by a Spanish judge as "Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe", Abu Qatada has been in and out of jail since first being arrested in 2001. He was sent back to prison last March for breaching his bail conditions.

Jordan removed the last obstacle preventing Britain from sending Abu Qatada back home last month by approving an extradition treaty satisfying the concerns of British judges that evidence obtained through torture could be used against him.

The saga has been embarrassing for Britain's Conservative-led government, which wants to appear tough on security and immigration.

(AP) ? The presidents of Nicaragua and Venezuela offered Friday to grant asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden, one day after leftist South American leaders gathered to denounce the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane over Europe amid reports that the American was aboard.

Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua and Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela made their offers during separate speeches in their home countries Friday afternoon. Snowden has asked for asylum in numerous countries, including Nicaragua and Venezuela.

"As head of state, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela decided to offer humanitarian asylum to the young American Edward Snowden so that he can live (without) ... persecution from the empire," Maduro said, referring to the United States. He made the offer during a speech marking the anniversary of Venezuela's independence. It was not immediately clear if there were any conditions to Venezuela's offer.

In Nicaragua, Ortega said he was willing to make the same offer "if circumstances allow it." Ortega didn't say what the right circumstances would be when he spoke during a speech in Managua.

He said the Nicaraguan embassy in Moscow received Snowden's application for asylum and that it is studying the request.

"We have the sovereign right to help a person who felt remorse after finding out how the United States was using technology to spy on the whole world, and especially its European allies," Ortega said.

The offers came following a flap about the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane in Europe earlier this week amid reports that Snowden might have been aboard.

Spain on Friday said it had been warned along with other European countries that Snowden, a former U.S. intelligence worker, was aboard the Bolivian presidential plane, an acknowledgement that the manhunt for the fugitive leaker had something to do with the plane's unexpected diversion to Austria.

It is unclear whether the United States, which has told its European allies that it wants Snowden back, warned Madrid about the Bolivian president's plane. U.S. officials will not detail their conversations with European countries, except to say that they have stated the U.S.'s general position that it wants Snowden back.

President Barack Obama has publicly displayed a relaxed attitude toward Snowden's movements, saying last month that he wouldn't be "scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker."

But the drama surrounding the flight of Morales, whose plane was abruptly rerouted to Vienna after apparently being denied permission to fly over France, suggests that pressure is being applied behind the scenes.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo told Spanish National Television that "they told us that the information was clear, that he was inside."

He did not identify who "they" were and declined to say whether he had been in contact with the U.S. But he said that European countries' decisions were based on the tip. France has since sent a letter of apology to the Bolivian government.

Meanwhile, secret-spilling website WikiLeaks said that Snowden, who is still believed to be stuck in a Moscow airport's transit area, had put in asylum applications to six new countries. He had already sought asylum from more than 20 countries, many of which turned him down.

Wikileaks said in a message posted to Twitter on Friday that it wouldn't be identifying the countries involved "due to attempted U.S. interference."

Icelandic lawmakers introduced a proposal in Parliament on Thursday to grant immediate citizenship to Snowden, but the idea received minimal support.

More than 1,000 London job hunters have posted ads on Kijiji’s resume page

Find me, recognize me, pick me.

In London, more than 1,000 people have thrown an ad on Kijiji?s resume page in hopes of finding a job.

University grads, young moms and high school students are jumping on the online self-advertising train to help land them a job.

?With the onset of technology, they are going to try different, creative ways to get attention,? said Raymond Pirouz, lecturer in the marketing facultyat the Ivey Business School at Western University.

Self-advertising isn?t a new phenomenon, but using sites such as Kijiji, Craigslist and Twitter to promote your job skills is.

?Technology enables potential candidates to reach a number of employers in a short timeframe ? extending their reach for opportunities,? said Darlene O?Neill, manager of career services at Fanshawe College.

?Anyone can place an ad. That?s not a very creative way to position yourself out there, that?s not differentiating you from anyone else that can do the exact same thing,? Pirouz said.

But it may just be the easiness of it that attracts so many job hunters like 33-year-old Maria-Jose Nino to use the service.

?If you?re more creative, you can do some more creative things but, for me, I work full time and this is so easy and it can be free.?

Nino has a full-time job in London working as an administrator for the director of the National Research Council but is looking for part-time administrative work on the side.

On June 2, she paid $8.99 to post a top ad on Kijiji to assist in her search.

?I didn?t want to put too much ? I just wanted people to want to converse with me and see what I have to offer and then if I can help their needs, to contact me.?

So far, it?s been a positive experience for Nino. She has received two email responses to her ad that could turn into potential work opportunities.

Jeff Hodgins, 35, has worked in the automotive industry for 11 years. He?s been unemployed for two months and turned to Kijiji as one method of job searching.

?I put a fairly wordy ad on there and basically just tried to sell myself a little bit . . . it?s a great way to try and promote yourself a little bit and it doesn?t cost anything.?

Hodgins has received a few responses to his ad but no job offers.

?Unfortunately, I had a company on there that was doing secret shopper work, and it ended up being false company.?

Pirouz said that placing an ad online is not going to be the best way to land a meaningful job.

Hodgins said he has to sift through spam and unrelated responses to find some potential employers.

?The first time I did it, I got a lot of sales and promotion type offers and a lot of things outside of my field that I decided not to respond to.?

Hodgins is staying hopeful as he looks for anything from service adviser work to becoming an automotive assistant at Canadian Tire.

?Yes, absolutely I?m very hopeful ? I also use the job ad section to look for jobs ? I use Kijiji on a daily basis.?

To separate yourself from the crowd, Pirouz recommends being as creative as possible.

?The attempts that will be most successful will be ones that exhibit some sort of unique creativity that are in context with the kind of job they?re looking for.?

O?Neill suggests using as many avenues to job hunt as possible.

?Any way that someone can promote themselves as a potential valuable employee works. Having said that, I believe a multi-pronged self-promotional approach is important but needs to be targeted towards the field that the individual is seeking employment in.?

WHAT NOT TO DO

- Ads with spelling and grammatical errors like this one are a big no-no, says Darlene O?Neill, manager of career services at Fanshawe. The spelling and grammar mistakes will turn off potential employers.

?Me, logan 18 years old and my brother brandon 20 years old, are looking for some work just to get some money we are able to do most things just contact me with what the job is, our hours are competely flexable and you can contact me any day of the week, both me and my brother have experience with laubour both working summers for PNR.

Just text or call me at 226-xxx-xxxx?

O?Neill also advises job seekers not to put their photo and Google map in postings for safety reasons

Bank of Japan QE needed, but structural reforms also important

By Stanley White

TOKYO (Reuters) - The Bank of Japan should stick with its expanded quantitative easing to achieve its inflation target, but this may not be enough to foster sustainable economic growth unless it is coupled with structural reforms, the OECD said on Tuesday.

Japan's government should stay with its plan to double the sales tax to 10 percent, compile a detailed plan to return to primary budget surplus in 2020 and boost revenue from other taxes, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development said.

The size of fiscal consolidation needed means Japan does face the risk of a spike in interest rates that would hurt the financial system due to its large exposure to Japanese government bonds, the Paris-based think tank said.

"The new quantitative and qualitative monetary easing should be implemented to meet the new 2 percent price stability target, although this may not be enough," the OECD said in its economic survey of Japan.

"Pushing ahead with structural reform on a broad front is equally imperative to achieve sustained growth."

The BOJ earlier this month committed to open-ended asset buying to nearly double the monetary base to 270 trillion yen ($2.72 trillion) by the end of 2014 to end 15 years of deflation and achieve its 2 percent inflation target in two years.

At a news conference, OECD officials said they were uncertain when Japan would meet its inflation target but that they were willing to give the BOJ some leeway as long as prices are approaching the target.

"We don't know how quickly it will take for inflation to come back," said Randall Jones, a senior economist at the OECD.

"It would be okay if it took three years. What is important is that the BOJ has committed to continue its policy until the target is achieved."

Haruhiko Kuroda, the BOJ's new governor, has dubbed the policy quantitative and qualitative easing, because the BOJ is greatly increasing the size of asset purchases and changing the composition by focusing on longer-term government debt.

Japan's consumer prices are still showing small annual declines, and many private-sector economists doubt the BOJ can meet its price target by 2015.

The OECD forecast that Japan's core-core consumer prices, which exclude fresh food and energy, will rise around 0.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014 from the same period a year earlier.

It is important for Japan to end deflation because this lowers nominal gross domestic product (GDP), which worsens Japan's debt-to-GDP ratio, the OECD said. Japan's debt burden is already the worst among major economies at more than twice the size of its $5 trillion economy.

FISCAL DISCIPLINE

In order to repair public finances, the government should not use multiple tax rates when raising the sales tax, the OECD said. Some lawmakers have argued that the government should exempt food and other items from sales tax hikes.

Should doubts about fiscal discipline emerge, Japan's financial sector would be vulnerable as government debt accounts for about a fifth of all bank assets, the OECD said.

The OECD did turn more positive on Japan's growth prospects due to expectations for higher private consumption and an increase in capital expenditure as exports recover.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's stimulus spending and a decline in the yen also led the OECD to upgrade its forecasts.

Japan's economy will expand 1.4 percent both this year and in 2014, the OECD said. That is higher than its previous forecasts of 0.7 percent growth and 0.8 percent growth, respectively.

Labor market reforms to increase the number of female workers and improve productivity are also needed to help Japan's economy grow faster and help end deflation, the OECD said.

Abe's government will announce an economic growth strategy in June, and investors will look for signs of how far the government will push its structural reform agenda.

Rating agency Standard & Poor's said on Tuesday it saw more than a one-third chance that it would downgrade Japan's sovereign ratings because of uncertainty about whether the government's push to revive growth and end deflation will succeed.

"The continuing prospect of a downgrade arises from risks associated with recent government initiatives and uncertainty of their success," S&P said in a report.

"Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's plan to lift Japan out of deflation and spur economic expansion - known as 'Abenomics' - has three pillars: bold monetary easing, fiscal efforts to spur growth, and a strategy to induce private sector investment," it said.

"Of the three engines that Mr. Abe foresees reinvigorating the nation's economy, so far only one, monetary easing, has kicked into full gear. The others remain idle."

S&P has an AA- long-term rating on Japan's sovereign debt.
