Alvarez: “It Didn’t Take a Genius to See” Ortiz Injury Coming

After Bellator announced that Michael Chandler and Eddie Alvarez would fight again at the promotion’s November 2nd card, the reaction amongst many hardcore fans and pundits was that it was the ‘real main event’ for “Rampage vs. Tito”. After all, Chandler and Alvarez are two of the planet’s best 155érs not signed to the UFC, and their first fight back in 2011 was widely considered to be “fight of the year”. Plus, unlike Jackson-Ortiz, Chandler-Alvarez II is a title fight.

Of course, as the MMA world knows, Ortiz was recently forced to drop out of the headliner due to a fractured neck. As a result, Chandler-Alvarez II has taken center stage, just as the former champ Alvarez apparently predicted would be the case. While speaking to MMA Junkie.com recently, Alvarez relayed the following:

“What did I think? ‘I told you so.’ That’s what I thought,” Alvarez said. “You can ask everyone at Bellator. That’s what I thought in my own head. I told them all. I said, ‘Me and Mike are going to be the main event.’ As soon as they said we’re co-main event to Tito and ‘Rampage,’ I told them we’d be the main event. I guaranteed them that.

“I knew in my head that Tito or ‘Rampage,’ one of them would not make it through their training camp. These are guys who have been in this sport so long. I’ve been in this sport long, and I have dings and I’m lucky to make it through a training camp. Tito’s been plagued with injuries and it didn’t take a genius to see that one coming.”

Mr. Ortiz has certainly been “plagued” with injuries, there’s no doubt about that. Now it will be interesting to see what kind of rating’s Bellator 106 pulls on SPIKE, as in addition to the aforementioned title fight, it will also feature featherweight champ Pat Curran taking on Daniel Strauss, and “King Mo” Lawal fighting Emanuel Newton for the interim light-heavyweight belt. It’s definitely a stacked card, and the good news is that we can all watch it for free…
