Do you think step-parents have a place at every event the child has?

My son is moving off to college, he does not have a good relationship with his step-mother, yet she insists on coming with us on move-in day. I think this day is for us: him, me and his father. Having her along is just going to complicate things and make things uncomfortable.

Update: August 11, 2012.
Thank you all for your responses; truly do appreciate the input. Had this women acted at all, in any sense, like a mom, it would not be an issue. My son left his dad's house because of this woman. She has shown zero interest in trying to patch up the rift and yet all of a sudden wants to "play the part" and show up for this. Not sure how it will play out, "dad" says he won't come if wife isn't welcome, which is why son won't tell him he does not want her there; he wants his dad to be there. Think I may just take him early and his dad & his wife can come later.
