Why Social Media Means Customer Service can Make or Break your ...

Customer service is often the lesser cousin to self-congratulatory brand marketing, and for a long time customers have simply endured this situation as they were effectively powerless to do anything about it. But no more. Increasing customer frustration is being match by growing pressure on brands to service the customers they have says the newly released 2012 American Express? Global Customer Service Barometer.

Not surprisingly, social media is instrumental in this shift. Consumers are using social media are wielding growing influence, telling more people about their service experiences, good and bad.

Heer are some of the key facts from the report that dramatize how customer service can make or break tour brand as a function of what it inspire customers to say about you across their social media channels:

  • Customers say they?d spend 21% more with companies who deliver great service, compared to 13% on average.
  • More than eight in ten consumers have bailed on a purchase because of a poor service experience compared to 55% overall.
  • On average social media users will tell 42 people about their good experiences, compared to 15 people overall.

When it comes to specific complaints, consumer sentiment is equally declarative. When asked what would most cause consumers to switch brands, the responses were:

    • Rudeness: 33%
    • Passing the buck: 26%
    • Waiting: 10%
    • Constant follow-ups: 10%

As damning as this seems, it also represents a clear description of areas in which your brand can exceed its competitors using social media. In return, customers will use their own channels to champion their positive experiences.

The net takeaway of the Report is that social media is polarizing the impact of customer service in your business. The better your service, the greater the benefits. The worse it is, the more it?s shared. So while it seems self-evident to say that a company should be committed to genuinely serve its customers (especially since it?s far cheaper to keep a customer than win a new one or convert a critic), social media is reminding us that this is a must if you want to succeed in the social business marketplace.

UK's thoroughly modern royals? Not exactly. Commoner Kate has to curtsy.

The British monarchy has raised eyebrows by updating a rulebook to include guidelines on how the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, who has no royal blood, must acknowledge the "blood princesses."

By Mian Ridge,?Correspondent / June 26, 2012

News that the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, the probable future queen of England, has been instructed to curtsy to her husband?s younger cousins has caused some surprise here, where she has quickly come to be regarded as one of the most senior members of the royal family.

Queen Elizabeth II has approved an update of the Order of Precedence in the Royal Household, a sort of manual of court rules, that has been amended to take into account the addition of Kate, who married Prince William last year.

The Order now states that Kate, who has no royal blood in her veins, must curtsy to the ?blood princesses?: the Princess Royal, Anne; Princess Alexandra, the granddaughter of George V; and the daughters of the Duke of York, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie; when she is not accompanied by her husband.

When Kate is with William, she need not curtsy to the blood princesses, but even in his presence she must curtsy to the Queen and Prince Philip; her father-in-law Charles, the Prince of Wales; and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall.

It has come as a surprise to some that the royal family should spell out such an arcane piece of protocol at a time when it is seeking to project a more modern image. Kate, with her relaxed, easy manner, is considered to have been great asset in this endeavor.

The royal family is also attempting to pare itself down and present a more compact group of key family members at public events. During the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations earlier this month only Prince Charles, Camilla, William, Kate and Harry joined the queen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Ten years earlier, at the Golden Jubilee events, all the queen?s four children stood alongside her.

"It is quite apparent that the more distant royals are being phased out, in terms of their duties and privileges, although it will be done slowly,? says Liz Brewer, an expert on etiquette among the British upper classes. ?But this is the form, this is how things are done, and there are certain rules that you follow. Once you start to say, let?s forget that one, the whole thing starts to fall apart.?

She cites as an example of this general rule the relaxation of protocol at Royal Ascot ? an annual horse race attended by the queen, a racing fanatic ? governing which people are invited into the royal enclosure.

?Once those rules were relaxed the dress code got more and more inappropriate until you had people with short dresses flying up and all that sort of thing,? says Ms. Brewer.

This year, the organizers sought to undo the damage with an exacting new dress code that specified skirts of knee-length or longer and hats ?with a base of four inches or more.?

The order was last updated in 2005, following Prince Charles?s marriage to Camilla Parker-Bowles. That change clarified that neither Princess Anne nor Princess Alexandra would have to curtsy to Camilla when Prince Charles was not in the room.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the new update of the order is whether Kate Middleton is expected to curtsy to the younger princesses when the royal family is relaxing in private. If she is, it must come as a relief that?Debretts, which has published a heavy ?Peerage and Baronetage? tome since the 18th?century, defines the curtsy as ?just a short bob (not a full ground-sweeping dip).?

USA Funds presents Excellence in Debt Management award to SU

Syracuse University is among three winners of the 2012 Excellence in Debt Management Awards from USA Funds. USA Funds recognized three postsecondary institutions for their efforts to promote financial literacy and help their students minimize and manage student loan debt.

finlitThe other two winners are Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., and Monroe College,?Bronx, N.Y.

SU offers a comprehensive financial literacy program, I Otto Know This! Named for SU's mascot, the program includes financial literacy grants designed to replace alternative education loan funds to students who commit to attending financial literacy sessions each semester. The grant program has saved Syracuse University students more than $2.5 million since 2009.

The University also uses USA Funds Life Skills? lessons, including the budgeting module, which is a ?to-do? item on students? financial aid online requirement checklist. More than 2,900 users have taken lessons through the program.

Additional financial literacy outreach activities at SU include actively presenting on personal financial topics to campus organizations and programs, a column in the financial aid office electronic newsletter, a dedicated website, listserv and video series. The award includes a $5,000 USA Funds grant to support scholarships for SU students.

?These three colleges and universities offer creative and effective debt management programs that have produced positive results,? says Denise B. US gasoline prices cheapest since January

(AP) ? The price of gasoline has dropped to a five-month low, giving drivers some relief ahead of the July 4 holiday.

The national average fell to around $3.40 per gallon on Tuesday. South Carolina, at $2.987, has the distinction of being the first state with an average below $3 since February 2011. Even in states that impose high gas taxes, such as New York and California, pump prices are averaging less that $4.

Americans are now spending roughly $200 million per day less on gas than in early April, when gas peaked at $3.94 per gallon. And analysts are expecting further declines. One economist on Tuesday forecast the national average will soon fall to $3.10 per gallon.

Still, saving a few dollars on gas only does so much for consumer psychology in the current economic climate. The Conference Board's reading of consumer confidence fell in June for the fourth month in a row. It said worries about the unemployment rate, low home values, a shaky stock market and a struggling European economy could hamper consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

Cheaper gas hasn't encouraged people to drive more either. They're buying about 3.5 percent less gasoline than they did last year, even though a gallon is now 18 cents cheaper.

"There's still so much uncertainty out there," said Gene McGillian, a broker and oil analyst at Tradition Energy. "The economy's still in troubled waters. Unemployment hasn't fallen that much and people are just more conscious about how much they drive."

MasterCard SpendingPulse, which tracks gasoline purchases around the country, said Americans have bought less gas for a record 66 weeks in a row when compared with how much they purchased a year before.

Worries about the global economy are keeping oil near 8-month lows. Prices have dropped more than 20 percent since May 1, though they rebounded Tuesday as European leaders prepared to discuss a slate of proposals to stabilize the region's economy. Meetings are scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

A failure to finally find a solution would likely push the eurozone economy back into recession and cut energy demand in a region that consumes 16 percent of the world's oil.

Benchmark U.S. crude added 15 cents to end the day at $79.36 per barrel in New York while Brent crude added $2.01 to end at $93.02 per barrel in London.

Oil was due for a rebound after the steep drop, McGillian said. Brent crude jumped after Norway announced that crude production will decline in the North Sea after about 700 oil workers went on strike. Brent crude comes from the North Sea.

In other futures trading, heating oil added 3.8 cents to finish at $2.5765 per gallon while wholesale gasoline was steady, ending the day at $2.6451 per gallon. Natural gas added 7.3 cents to finish at $2.767 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Supreme Court Year in Review

The court did hold that it was premature to invalidate the fourth provision at issue.?This part of the law does two things:? 1) It requires state officials to determine the immigration status of any person they stop on some other legitimate basis (if they have reason to suspect the person is in the country unlawfully), and 2) It requires that the police must have the person?s immigration status determined before the person is released.?The court did not pass final?judgment on the first part, the mandatory status check.?And it strongly indicates that the second part would be unconstitutional if it were read to allow prolonged detention.??Detaining individuals solely to verify their immigration status would raise constitutional concerns,? the court says.?And if?if?the the provision ?only requires state officers to conduct a status check during the course of an authorized, lawful detention or after a detainee has been released, the provision likely would survive preemption??? ?Likely would??if read and enforced by the Arizona authorities in this more benign way.?At least ?absent some showing? of other adverse consequences.?And subject to further civil rights challenges.? Rather than uphold this provision, the court notes that ?the nature and timing of this case counsel caution in evaluating [its] validity? because the law has not gone into effect and there is thus uncertainty about ?what the law means and how it will be enforced.??

Kathy Caprino: What's in Your God Box?

Last month, I had the deep pleasure of speaking with award-winning women's marketing expert and now playwright, author and actor Mary Lou Quinlan about her new book, play and programs called The God Box Project. I was blessed too to have a personal preview of the power of The God Box: Sharing My Mother's Gift of Faith, Love and Letting Go. I attended Mary Lou's book launch party in New York City and heard her speak firsthand of her mother Mary's transformative ritual of writing notes in which she shared her brief prayers to God on behalf of everyone whom she loved, cared about and wished the best for in her life. Reading the book, I felt changed somehow, reminded of how, when I'm stressed and over-the-top busy as many of us are each day, we move away from the compassion and kindness in our hearts to thinking only of ourselves and our own self-preservation, closing ourselves down from our most loving and caring selves.

About The God Box

As Mary Lou explains, when her beloved mother, Mary Finlayson, died, her family was left bereft -- until Quinlan found her mother's "God Box," or rather, boxes. These simple containers were stuffed with tiny notes written by Mary, asking and praying for everything from the right flooring for her daughter's new home to a cure for her own blood cancer. Mary's petitions are presented with love and without expectation. Note by note, Quinlan unearths insights into her mother's compassion, faith, and perseverance, and revelations of her innermost thoughts -- nostalgic, surprising, and even a bit shocking. And through the journey, the author discovers her own more empathetic, more engaged self -- the woman her mother had believed in all along.

Curious as to Mary Lou's transformation from corporate and entrepreneurial powerhouse focused on helping advertising clients understand the inner thoughts of female consumers, to author and performer who is in essence a spiritual midwife of her mother's lessons in humility, compassion and care, I asked Mary Lou to share about that transition.

Mary Lou explains:

I realize in looking back that my mother supersedes all. In reflecting on my career, I see and appreciate deeply that I built a successful professional life and made my mark in marketing. I believe I followed a path that has been diverse, accomplished, and satisfying. My job as head of my marketing firm Just Ask a Woman (now a division of Mary Lou Quinlan & Co.) was to tell the truth -- the whole truth -- about what women feel and hold inside, and to honor those thoughts and feelings. Perhaps it's the time of my life now where I realize that I am strong enough to speak from my heart, fully myself -- to integrate the various parts of me and tell my own whole truth. The advantage of being an entrepreneur is that I don't answer to anyone -- other than my clients -- and in the end, with my business being about telling the truth about what women feel, why would I draw the line personally about what I deeply feel?
I've always been the same woman at work -- determined, funny, happy, passionate. But certainly in my years in advertising, my job was to win and retain the business of clients and doing so sometimes required of me to draw lines between my personal views and those of my clients. My messages were focused on my clients' interests, not my own. That's the job -- leading an advertising agency means putting my clients' needs first. But when I launched Just Ask a Woman in 1999, I created a company where I started to let my full voice be heard. The next wave of sharing my authentic voice was in 2005 when I wrote my book Time Off for Good Behavior. Telling the truth about women in business and in corporate America rattled cages in a big way. For instance, I shared in the book that it's okay to take a break from your job and do what you need to restore yourself. Sometimes work just isn't enough. And in another book, What She's Not Telling You, I also revealed that women often tell half-truths -- sometimes as a form of defense that keeps women stuck, but also as a way of detouring a probing marketer from getting inside their inner space.

As I've progressed, I've now hit a point where telling my mother's story -- one of spirituality and of practical life lessons, aspiration, love, and even death -- feels right for me. A friend said to me, "This is the job you were meant to grow into. This was meant to be your life."

Women and the Workforce

About women's challenges in the workforce, Mary Lou shared that women's advancement in business remains an uphill climb. Arguments made in the media and by many corporate leaders and managers about how women should behave and advance in business seem to continually force women into narrower and narrower avenues of compliance. Women are told they should network but not just network with women, for instance.

Unfortunately, there's been a focus on what women are not doing correctly. Career paths are not more free-flow as they should be -- they're getting tighter and tighter, and blame keeps falling back on women as to why they haven't advanced, as opposed to our looking at the broader culture, systems and support. I'm all about letting yourself be fully ambitious and internally sound -- not having to make a choice between the two. When do you wake up and say, "This is my life!"? When you retire? That's too late.

The ultimate outcome of The God Box Project, play and programs?

The God Box is a wonderful, sharing, compassionate way to bring hope to your life. It's also a comforting ritual particularly in our world today that feels so worried, tight, negative, divisive. To share something unifying and uplifting is a powerful legacy that I dream of passing on, on Mom's behalf.

My dream is that millions of people around the world -- men and women -- will begin the tradition of The God Box, and find in that little ritual some needed relief, hope, comfort that supports their own beliefs. I believe that The God Box can truly help make a more compassionate, kind and loving world. It also helps us rethink the relationships that were so fundamental in our lives and our upbringing -- our mother-daughter/father-daughter relationships and what they gave us. Reconnecting to our love for our family, and healing what let us down in our family lives, is also an outcome I dream of for The God Box.

To me, Mary Lou offers women the world over a powerful and successful role model for living an authentic, integrated and meaningful professional life. I for one am so grateful for Mary Lou's work -- for giving me a pathway to see and believe that supporting our deeply held spiritual beliefs doesn't have to be something we keep separate from our professional identities. Honoring our full selves and bringing forth our compassionate, loving hearts in both our personal and professional lives will help us heal the world back to health.

Check out The God Box Project.com (and don't miss the new The God Box mobile app on iTunes). Feel how transformational it can be to share your deepest hopes and prayers for yourself and for your loved ones and those you care about.

Online Life Coaching schools are easy to find, but how do you know which is a good school and how do you know if the coach is any good?

Well first of all let us find out what life coaching actually is.

Life coaching is basically the art of helping students find their goals and success in life. This is not just financial success, but can also be relational, spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional. When you put them all together, this is what I call "Harmonic Wealth."

Online Life Coaching (as well as offline) was originally an offshoot from executive training. This practice tended to look after top executives and the stresses that go along with this kind of job, but it was soon recognized that everyone can and does benefit from having their own online life coaching program.

Goal setting is and success is an intrinsic part of man's inner desire. Man is driven by the need to keep improving one's own life and many people find this hard to do because 1) they do not know where to start, 2) they get easily distracted by our lifestyles and 3) we are simply too busy to focus on making more time to improve our life and consequently, we end up running around the treadmill forever.

Online life coaching takes our busy schedule and our crazy lifestyles into consideration. Being online means that we do not have to travel to see our coach. We can now do one-on-one video conferencing using services like Skype. So we can save time and money or even be in different countries.

Online life coaching schools also allow students who cannot travel to partake in self improvement. For example, you may be a single parent, or you may be sick, handicapped, looking after a house bound relative, you may even be too shy to leave home, no matter what the reason, you can now benefit from the online life coaching programs the same as every other student.

How do you choose an online life coaching school? Well first of all recommendations always help. If you know someone who has been with the coach before and they were happy, you may find that this is good for you. Personal recommendations is the best form of advertising around.

You need to feel comfortable with your coach. You are probably going to give each other information that you may consider private and confidential so you should be happy to let them know this information. I suggest talking to them on the phone or via Skype video a couple of times to get to know them before actually signing up for a program. I would certainly be happy to do this with you.

Experience is another major factor that comes into play. I do not think it is essential that the coach be a certified coach by some international school, in fact I am not. I do however think that the coach should walk the talk.

As a student I was often financially "coached" by mentors who were completely broke or "coached" in relationship building by mentors who had disaster relationships. This just doesn't work for me.

Your coach should be well grounded in his subject. My speciality for example, lies in entrepreneur training, wealth creation and goal and dream getting. This is what I am best at myself and this is what I can promote as an expert.

I have been a successful entrepreneur since the age of 16 (I am now 46) and have three companies running very well. I live in paradise (which was my dream) in Boracay Island and I re-created my own wealth after going bankrupt in the year 2000 after my business partner ran off with all my money! I walk my talk and this should be one of the biggest deciding factors in getting your online life coaching program.

Online Life Coaches In Pittsburgh can be found all over the place and there are good and not so good coaches. Do not work with a coach who promises you over-night success. Changing your life takes time and commitment and results may take a long time incoming because changing your life is a slow process that starts in your head and the results come in your physical tangible life.

If you are prepared to give your life the success it deserves, then online life coaching may just be the thing for you especially if you have a busy lifestyle or if you are not able to leave the house for some reason.

Ancient Italy History

The history of Italy begins in the 9th century B.C. when the earliest written records of tribes exist. There were three main groups of people who established the first settlements in the land we call Italy today. The Oscans, Umbrains, and Latins were the three linguistic groups that could be easily separated by their languages.

Eventually the Latin culture was the group to become the most dominant, resulting in Rome?s establishment around 350 B.C. This was the most powerful city-state in Italy?s history, which became a flourishing empire until its fall in 476 A.D. There were many city-states that remained for hundreds of years after Rome fell, which were later conquered by outside forces and annexed.

Ancient Tribes of Italy

Before Rome grew and conquered the surrounding people and lands, Italic tribes were cultures that were not necessarily related or similar in ethnicity and language. Different languages like Greek and Italic were spoken, with each having their own dialects.

Some history of the tribes in Italy is lost due to written records only appearing at a certain time. Mythology has been examined, as well as archaeological ruins, to determine more details about the ancient tribal cultures. The lineages that lived in Italy included descendants of Etruscans, Ligurians, and Raetians.

The Etruscan Civilization

One of the most flourishing civilizations in Italy?s history was the Etruscan culture that appears in records dated after 800 B.C. It?s unknown where the origins of the Etruscans came from, but a popular theory among historians is that they are an indigenous people. Others suggest they moved to their place in Italy in the form of invasion from the Near East or farther north.

The Etruscan civilization grew thanks to their large mining industry of precious metals like iron and copper. Of course, this put them in a sticky situation as competitors with the Greeks, who also enjoyed the rich value of such resources.

Greek Influence on Italy History

Many people from ancient Greece came to Italy, and they brought many cultural elements with them. The Greek language, religion, and political ideas made its way into several regions of Italy that were once primarily influenced by the indigenous tribes that lived there.

A very significant example of this cross-cultural influence was the introduction of a very specific variety of the Greek alphabet. The Etruscans decided to take on this new system of writing and speaking, which was called the Old Italic alphabet. This later evolved into the familiar Latin alphabet, which is the most commonly used one in the world.

5 Benefits of Martial Arts as Daily Exercise to Avoid Anxiety ...

By?Ryan Rivera ?-

How Martial Arts Affects Anxiety

A woman experiencing anxiety

? Ooi Hong Kiong

All exercise has benefits for anxiety, but martial arts can be particularly valuable, especially if you take the activity seriously and do it every day. Some of these benefits include:

Perhaps the greatest effect that martial arts has on anxiety is that it is a tool to give you control over yourself and your surroundings. Those that learn martial arts learn discipline, and that discipline affects more than simply the movements within MA itself. That control allows you to handle your emotions in your day to day life as well, keeping you calm and focused rather than letting your mind and thoughts scatter.

It?s easy to forget how much confidence also affects your ability to control your anxiety. When you?re confident in yourself, then you know that you?ll be able to more easily handle any events that life may throw at you. It?s not always about controlling all of your anxious thoughts. Rather, it?s about experiencing less of a feeling of ?flight? when faced with a stressful situation. Martial arts provides this confidence, so that rarely will you feel there are things you cannot handle.

When you do experience a stressful day, MA is a great way to relieve much of that stress. In a controlled and safe environment, you have an opportunity to release much of that stressful energy. Any aggression you have inside you is used as a tool, rather than a hindrance. You harness it, and allow the energy to fuel your MA sequences and bouts, brining that energy outside of your body so that it isn?t being held back.

Not all anxiety is caused by your thoughts. In fact, in most Americans, one of the leading causes of anxiety is simply excess physical energy. As a result of the mind/body connection, that energy is then turned into anxiety, because your body has no other form of release. Martial arts uses all of your muscles and tires each of them out. Any anxiety caused by excess muscular energy goes away, and you?re left with a calmer body and a calmer mind.

  • Healthy Social Experience

Finally, one of the most often forgotten benefits of MA as an anxiety reduction tool is that you?re always with at least one other person, performing actions that are healthy and productive. With today?s busy and complex lifestyle, this time that you spend surrounded by other people of similar interests is incredibly healthy ? a type of social environment that few people normally have an opportunity to fit into their schedules. It?s a 100% healthy coping strategy that takes your mind off the troubles of the day, and the benefits of that should not be overlooked.

Using MA to Relieve Anxiety

In addition to the benefits outlined above, all forms of exercise also burn stress hormones and increase endorphins ? the body?s natural pain killers. Combine those benefits with all of the advantages outlined above, and you?ll see why MA is such a powerful way to reduce your daily anxiety and stress. As long as you put effort into your martial arts practices, you?ll find that your anxiety melts away.

Kim Kardashian Explains Why It Took 'So Long' To Date Kanye West

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the reality star explains why their longtime friendship just recently turned romantic.
By Christina Garibaldi

Kim Kardashian seems to finally have found her Prince Charming in Kanye West. The two have been parading around Paris, proving along the way that their relationship is not merely a publicity stunt.

Kim is now opening out about her blossoming relationship to Oprah Winfrey in the second part of her Kardashian family interview on "Oprah's Next Chapter." In an excerpt from the upcoming episode, the talk-show host asks Kim if her relationship with Kanye is her new fairytale, a question that immediately makes her blush.

"We met maybe almost a decade ago, I've known him for a really long time, we've been friends for like six or seven years, so it's very comforting to have someone that knows everything about you that respects you, understands, has gone through similar things," Kim said. "I can really relate to his mother passing, he can really relate to my father passing. I mean, there's so many similarities in our life that I feel like I'm at a really happy, good space."

While the two could have started dating a while ago, Kim said she feels that her experiences, namely her divorce from Kris Humphries, were things she had to go through in order to be ready for this relationship.

"I don't know why it took so long for us to kind of get together," Kim said. "But I think I needed to go through all my experiences and some that he's gone through."

In addition to questioning Kim on her relationship, Winfrey also sat down with her sister Khloé and her husband Lamar Odom. The two, who married in 2009 after dating a month, were asked if they feel the pressure from the public to make their marriage work.

"I don't feel the pressure by outsiders," Khloé said. "I'm not someone who is easily influenced by the public. This is my marriage, this is my real life. I feel the pressure from me from myself to be a great wife."

Khloé and Odom have had to deal with their fair share of hardships this past year. After moving from Los Angeles to Dallas for his basketball career, Odom parted ways with the Dallas Mavericks, their reality show "Khloé & Lamar" went on hiatus and there are constant rumors that Khloé is pregnant. But they try not to pay attention to all the gossip.

"I don't get tabloids, I try to not go on blogs, but does it come to me through, of course, our publicists or this or that or my sisters," Khloe said. "Even my grandmother will text me and be like 'You're having twins?' I'm like, 'Not yet, I'm sorry.' "
