Lockerbie bomber Megrahi has died in Libya: brother

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, the Libyan convicted of the 1988 bombing of a PanAm flight over Lockerbie, died of cancer on Sunday aged 60, leaving many questions on the attack and its aftermath unanswered.

Megrahi, who said he was not responsible for bringing the jumbo jet down on the Scottish town and killing 270 people, was found guilty in 2001 but was freed in 2009 and returned to Libya because he had terminal cancer and was not expected to live long.

Megrahi's brother Mohammed told Reuters he had died at his home in the Libyan capital from complications from prostate cancer and the funeral would take place on Monday.

"He was too sick to utter anything on his deathbed," another brother, Abdulhakim, said. "Just because Abdul Basset is dead doesn't mean the past is now erased," he said. "We will always tell the world that my brother was innocent."

The decision by officials in Scotland to return Megrahi to Libya angered relatives of many victims, 189 of whom were American, and was criticized by Washington as Megrahi returned to a hero's welcome from Muammar Gaddafi.

That he survived for nearly three more years, outliving Gaddafi, who was overthrown last year, caused discomfort in Britain. Prime Minister David Cameron, visiting the United States on Sunday, said Megrahi should never have been freed.

Scottish leader Alex Salmond said his death confirmed his medical condition had been serious. "Mr Megrahi's death ends one chapter of the Lockerbie case, but it does not close the book," he said, noting Scottish lawyers were seeking other suspects.

Megrahi, the only person convicted for the bombing, was found guilty under Scots law of secretly loading a suitcase bomb onto a plane at Malta's Luqa Airport, where he was head of operations for Libyan Arab Airlines in December 1988.

The suitcase was transferred at Frankfurt to another flight and then onto New York-bound PanAm Flight 103 at London's Heathrow airport, concluded Scottish judges sitting at a converted Dutch military base selected as a neutral trial venue.

All 259 people aboard the aircraft were killed when it exploded and 11 people in the small town of Lockerbie died when homes and vehicles were obliterated by falling debris.

Megrahi, handed over by Gaddafi under a U.N.-brokered deal, always insisted he was merely an airline executive, not a Libyan intelligence agent as prosecutors charged.

His trial was part of a process of rapprochement by which Gaddafi distanced himself from association with groups regarded as terrorists in the West and secured renewed cooperation with Western firms keen to exploit Libya's oil and gas reserves.

CONTROVERSIES

Reaction to Megrahi's death reflected the controversies that have raged for years over his role.

Many people in Britain say they believe he was a scapegoat, while many in the United States have accused Britain of releasing him to help secure oil deals in Gaddafi's Libya. Britain has denied the charge.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer of New York, who wanted the Libyan government that took over after Gaddafi's ouster and killing by rebels to take Megrahi into custody, said his return to Libya was a major injustice.

"The whole deal smelled of a deal for oil for this man's freedom and that was almost blasphemy given what a horrible person he was and the terrible destruction and tragedy that he caused," Schumer told CNN.

"I don't know if we'll ever get to the bottom of it now."

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was in opposition when Megrahi was freed, said in Chicago: "I've always been clear he should never have been released from prison.

"Today is a day to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act. Our thoughts should be with them and their families for the suffering they've had."

Jim Swire, the father of one of the British Lockerbie victims, said he was convinced Megrahi was innocent.

"I've been satisfied for some years that this man had nothing to do with the murder of my daughter and I grit my teeth every time I hear newscasters say 'Lockerbie bomber has died'" he told BBC News television. "This is a sad day."

Megrahi told Reuters in October the West had exaggerated his role and the truth about what happened would emerge soon.

Babette Solon Hollister, 79, whose 20 year old daughter died on the PanAm flight said: "I don't know if he was totally guilty but we know he was involved ... I doubt anything will be resolved now."

Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC), which ousted Gaddafi last year, has said it would work with the Scottish government over the possible involvement of others in the 1988 bombing, an attack the country's new rulers are eager to distance themselves from.

"We would have liked to uncover more truths, but his death will not shut the Lockerbie file," NTC spokesman Mohamed al-Harizy said on Sunday.

Gaddafi's Libya emerged from isolation after it scrapped a banned weapons program and paid compensation for the Lockerbie bombing.

Megrahi was handed over by Libya with fellow suspect Al-Amin Khalifa Fahima under a U.N.-brokered deal. Fahima was acquitted by the Scottish judges at Camp Zeist in January 2001.

Megrahi was jailed in the town of Greenock, near Glasgow.

On Sunday, his neighbors in the Libyan capital rolled out a carpet and set up chairs in the courtyard outside his house in preparation for condolence visits by family and friends.

"My brother was surrounded by his wife, children and his mother as he took his last breath," his brother Abdulhakim said.

Sleep Apnea Linked to Higher Cancer Death Risk

SUNDAY, May 20 (HealthDay News) -- Sleep apnea has already been linked to a host of adverse health problems, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Now, new research suggests that in people who already have cancer, the sleep disorder may raise their risk of dying from cancer.

People with the most severe sleep apnea -- those who have 30 or more episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour of sleep -- had almost five times the risk of cancer death compared to someone without sleep apnea.

"Sleep apnea is the periodic pausing of breathing during sleep that results in drops in oxygen levels in your blood. It causes snoring and sleepiness during the day," explained study author Dr. Javier Nieto, chair of the department of population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, in Madison.

"Aside from being an annoyance to your spouse, family members and maybe even your neighbors depending on how loud your snoring is, sleep apnea is a severe problem. Drowsiness and sleepiness during the day increase the risk of accidents, and sleep apnea is associated with cardiovascular disease, heart disease, strokes, hypertension and cardiovascular mortality. Now, we see this new angle: an increase in cancer mortality," said Nieto.

Nieto is scheduled to present the study Sunday at the American Thoracic Society International Conference, in San Francisco.

Nieto said the new study was suggested by researchers from the University of Barcelona in Spain who found that when mice were deprived of oxygen periodically, skin cancer tumors grew faster in the mice. And, cancer cells in the lab that are deprived of oxygen produce molecules that stimulate the growth of blood vessels in an attempt to get more oxygen, he said.

Nieto and the Spanish researchers wondered if this effect was the same in humans. To test that theory, they reviewed data from more than 1,500 people included in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort. This study included 22 years of mortality data, as well as information from sleep studies.

The researchers adjusted the data to account for age, sex, body mass, smoking and other factors that might affect the risk of cancer death, and they found that sleep apnea increased the risk of cancer death. They also found that the more severe the sleep apnea, the more likely someone was to die from cancer.

People with mild sleep apnea -- five to 14.9 episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour -- had a 10 percent increased risk of cancer death, while those with moderate sleep apnea -- 15 to 29.9 episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour -- had double the risk of cancer death. Those with severe sleep apnea -- more than 30 episodes of low or no oxygen in an hour -- had a 4.8 times higher risk of cancer death.

Nieto said the study didn't prove a cause-and-effect relationship, but the association was quite strong. And, he noted that the findings were consistent in humans, animals and in cells.

He added that there is also a plausible mechanism for this association. When you have cancer and you repeatedly have episodes of low or no oxygen, the cancer cells "try to compensate for the lack of oxygen by growing additional blood vessels to get more oxygen. It's a defense mechanism," Nieto said. And, as those blood vessels keep growing, it helps the tumor to spread, he explained.

Dr. Steven Park, a sleep medicine specialist and otorhinolaryngologist at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, said he wasn't surprised by the findings.

"This goes along with the link between sleep apnea and pretty much every chronic medical condition out there," Park said. But, he added that this study's findings need to be confirmed in other studies, and ideally be published in a peer-reviewed journal. Research presented at medical meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

"Anyone with snoring, severe daytime fatigue, lack of memory or focus, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even someone who has to get up to go to the bathroom at night should be screened for sleep apnea," Park said. He added that it's possible to have sleep apnea without snoring, especially for women. So, if you're getting enough sleep at night, yet still feel tired during the day, it's important to bring this up to your doctor.

Park said there are home-monitoring devices that can be used to screen people at home initially.

Nieto said that treating sleep apnea will improve your quality of life, as well as reduce your risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. And, if you have cancer, he said, treating sleep apnea may help increase your odds of surviving cancer.

The Pros and Cons of Investing in Penny Stocks | Moneyhacker

From the heading of this article you can probably surmise at least one potential benefit of investing in penny stocks: they're cheap! In fact, any stock that trades at less than a dollar a share falls into this category. Despite that, however, they are considered to be extremely risky and volatiles stocks to invest in most of the time, a distinction that doesn't really jibe with the low-cost angle. In truth, there are several reasons why you might want to invest in such stock options, along with other facets of the trade that may stay your hand on its way to dialing your broker. Here are just a few you will want to be aware of before you commit a significant amount of funding to such a venture.

The main benefit of this type of stock, aside from the fact that you can purchase thousands of shares for the same amount of money that you might spend on merely dozens or hundreds of more expensive stocks, is that they can move very quickly and earn you a lot of money in the process. Of course, this could also be a decided drawback. On the upside, suppose you purchase 100 shares of a stock that costs $1 per share and it goes up fifty cents the same day. Good news! You just made $50. On the other hand, considering that the price of these stocks can fluctuate widely within any given 24-hour period, you could also lose whatever you invest in no time flat. It's a high-risk situation that has the potential to deliver fast rewards, but you may as well throw the dice on that outcome.

This leads us to the main negative aspect of such investments: because they are so cheap and so volatile, shady investors sometimes try to manipulate the market for their own personal gain. Especially popular is the "pump and dump" ploy in which a particular penny stock is selected by an investor (or group of investors). They buy up tons of shares, issue information that the stock is "hot" (even though they're the ones buying it), artificially inflate demand (and concurrently price), and then dump the stocks, deflating the value but earning a quick buck in the process, at the expense of other investors.

And another problem is that such stocks are rarely traded on reputable exchanges like the NYSE or NASDAQ. In some cases, a large company may fall on hard times and see their stock prices dip into the penny range, but more often than not these stocks come from small public companies and change hands rapidly via over-the-counter trading sites like OTC Bulletin Board (OTCBB) or Pink Sheets (and the latter isn't even regulated by the SEC).

Now, this isn't to say that you can't learn the ins and outs of trading these fast-paced stocks in order to have some fun with your investment funds and potentially see some major returns in a very short amount of time. If you can target the best technology penny stocks you may be able to turn a profit in very little time. But you definitely need to do your homework and take this niche market with a grain of salt. Don't forget it's a gamble.

Video by Bryn Pennetti

Bryn Pennetti
Arts & Entertainment Editor

Junior David Lovas started his musical career playing violin. Now, his rising online popularity is catching attention as he furthers his electronic music.

How did you begin creating music?

I?ve always been interested in music. Ever since a young age I?ve always been musically involved. From violin, guitar, up to the synthesizers I use today. I had always played instruments, I had always been able to navigate my way around a keyboard or piano. But it wasn?t until I obtained my first synthesizer in December of 2010 that I began to start creating my own electronic music.

Have you always liked techno?

Absolutely not. I used to despise it. Contrary to popular belief I don?t make or listen to techno. I deal with Trance Music, a different Subgenre of electronic music. I believed that [electronic music] required little skill. I couldn?t have been more wrong.

What is the first track you ever made?

The first thing I wrote was a track called ?Horizons.? It was right after I received my first synthesizer. I created a sound that I dubbed ?horizons? and I would usually end up playing this one specific melody/bass progression I came up with. I never recorded it, since I didn?t have recording equipment then, but I would suppose I could credit it as the first thing I ever wrote.

What is your favorite track?

My favorite track of mine is pretty much always the last track I?ve created. My newer tracks are simply better as I?ve picked up new skills. I?d have to say ?A Day in the Past? is my favorite track I?ve written so far.

Do any artists inspire you?

I am inspired by many artists. I guess I would have to credit Armin Van Buuren for exposing me to so many different artists in the genre. Many people who aren?t accustomed to the sounds in EDM pretty much think all tracks are the same, but they are very, very wrong. I wouldn?t be able to tell you who mainly inspired me since there are so many. But I can tell you right off the bat some of my favorite composers are Ralphi B., M6, Amon Tobin, etc.

What programs/ instruments do you mainly use?

DAW wise (Digital Audio Workstation), aka the main software used in the creation process. When I first began producing I was using Logic Pro, but I quickly grew tired of its unnecessarily complex interface. Soon after I switched over to FL Studio as my main DAW, my music started to pick up momentum fast. I?ve really only had FL for several months and already my productions have improved 10 fold in quality.

Noticing the comments on your soundcloud, how do you respond to the criticism??

The way I respond to criticism is quite simple. I listen to what the person is saying, and I note their bias towards the Genre. If I gather that someone from a hip-hop, or a rock community is giving me advice on the structural format of my music, I usually disregard his or her words.

Sartor Resartus - Lingua Franca - The Chronicle of Higher Education

The opening of Thomas Carlyle's 1836 novel (in English "The Tailor Re-Tailored"). Language and clothing are more alike than they may at first appear to be.

I have a friend who holds a named professorship at a prestigious liberal-arts college. He owns a sharp-looking black suit, with thin lapels, that he often wears to conferences. My friend enjoys good beer. One day, in search of a six-pack, he journeyed to a nearby working-class tavern that sells a wide variety of beer. As he was paying for his purchase, another customer looked him over and said, ?Are you an undertaker?? My friend said, ?Excuse me?? The man repeated, ?Are you an undertaker?? Recounting the incident to me, my friend had no idea if his interlocutor was being funny or serious.

I was reminded of this story by Joan Acocella?s New Yorker review of Henry Hitching?s new book, The Language Wars: A History of Proper English. (I have not read the book, though I intend to?I greatly enjoyed his previous work, The Secret Life of Words.) The review made this person cross, and also this person and this person. Among their (legitimate) gripes were that Acocella misidentified John Rickford as a linguistic prescriptivist, rather than a stone-cold descriptivist, and more broadly her characterization of descriptivists as maintaining that languages do not follow any rules. Less legitimate were complaints that The New Yorker had the temerity to allow its dance critic to review a book about language.

There are other problems with the review, too, including the way it tends to overlook the profound differences between speaking and writing, and the way it keeps dragging in texts and concepts (Eric Partridge on slang? Alan Ross on U and non-U? Political correctness? Postmodernism?) that don?t have very much to do with each other. But my main complaint is that the whole subject is boring.

That?s right, I?m talking prescriptivism versus descriptivism. Basically the issue boils down to the following axioms:

  • English transpires in various (nonmutually exclusive) registers, sub-registers, sub-sub-registers, and so on. One such might be British spoken upper-class girls? school casual; another, American written academic humanities article; a third, text messages among college-educated people in their 20s and 30s.
  • Among the participants in each of these, there is, at any given moment, a general shared understanding about what is expected and accepted diction, syntax, and usage. In the upper registers, you can find versions of it in dictionaries and style manuals.
  • The shared understanding changes over time, as new words and idioms become established, traditional ones take on new meanings, grammar and syntax mutate (viz., the subjunctive), and slang or other nonstandard expressions make their way to the middle of the road.
  • Especially in the more established registers, there is disagreement over the pace of change. Some people think it should be relatively swift, and others think it should be relatively slow. Neither side has any actual influence on the course of events.
  • And that?s all there is to it.

Which brings me back to my friend and his black suit. It is just the thing for academic conferences, and as out-of-place in that bar as the sentence ?Me and my wife has been married for 25 years? would be on the Op-Ed page of The New York Times. Choosing your clothes is like choosing your words: You do both in much the same way as the others in your group do. When you go outside the group, you have to rethink your approach in order to fit in. Within groups, there are a small number of innovators and outliers. Some of their formulations take hold, but most do not. In any case, when people rail against new developments??They?re wearing shorts in the theater!??they?re commenting, more than anything else, about themselves.

The dictionaries and manuals are helpful, but it?s not always easy to discern what current conventions are. Much if not most of what I do in the classroom is trying to teach students to grasp and effectively deploy the accepted rules and standards of certain kinds of writing for publication. I may start calling my class ?Dress (Your Prose) for Success!?

Earlier, I said the whole subject is boring. That was hyperbole. The changing language is splendid spectator sport, in my humble opinion. And the classroom is an excellent vantage point from which to identify and assess the new words and usages, allowing you to put your money on the ones you?ll think will prevail. Right now, I?ve got my eye on a couple of contenders, including amongst (weirdly popular as a replacement for among), the extra of in not too big of a deal, and the ever-popular they as gender-neutral singular pronoun. If you want to handicap these or others, or talk about why and how they may have gone viral in the first place, I am so there.

However, if you want to make a case that they are reprehensible, symptomatic, or perfectly OK, you can wake me when the conversation?s over.

EPA report outlines potential Pebble mine risks

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - Large stretches of salmon-spawning streams and thousands of acres of wetlands would be wiped out if a large-scale mining project were to be built in southwestern Alaska's copper-rich Bristol Bay region, according to a report issued Friday by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The report, while not directly addressing it, is a potential blow to the massive Pebble copper and gold mine operation proposed by an international alliance of mining interests, and opposed by environmentalists and local native groups.

Risks from building and operating such a big mine, or series of mines, range from the near-certain loss of wetlands and streams and chronic water pollution to a remote possibility of a catastrophic breach in a tailings dam planned to be taller than the Washington Monument, the report said.

The report uses elements of the Pebble plan and other information about modern mining practices to project a future scenario, an EPA manager said Friday, but the agency made it clear it is not pre-judging the Pebble mine issue.

"EPA's draft study does not provide an in-depth assessment of any specific mining project, but instead assesses the potential environmental impacts associated with mining activities," the EPA wrote in a statement on its website. "The draft study in no way prejudges future consideration of proposed mining activities."

The Bristol Bay watershed assessment, now subject to public comment and scientific peer review, was initiated more than a year ago at the request of Alaska Native groups in the region. Those and several fishing and environmental groups have asked the EPA to invoke its authorities under the Clean Water Act to preemptively block development of the Pebble mine.

"What is most directly identified is what you would expect -- where there is a mine footprint, you would be losing streams and wetlands and habitat areas," Dennis McLerran, the EPA's Pacific Region director, said on a telephone conference call with media after releasing the report.

McLerran said the EPA is far from making any decision to stop development of the mine.

"This document itself will inform future decisions, but we're not ready or at the point to make any of the future decisions yet," he said.

The Bristol Bay region is famous for its huge runs of salmon. All five species of Alaska salmon are native to the area, which produces nearly half of the world's sockeye salmon, the EPA study said. Salmon fisheries and related natural resources support 14,000 jobs and have an average annual value of $480 million, the report said.

The Bristol Bay region is also famous for its abundant wildlife, including migratory birds and salmon-eating brown bears, as well as parks and wildlife refuges.

But the wild region's mineral resources have inspired Britain's Anglo American Plc and Canada's Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd to form a partnership to pursue what would be one of the world's largest open-pit copper mines at Pebble.

Earlier this week, Northern Dynasty announced that the companies' jointly owned Pebble Limited Partnership would be spending $107 million this year to start securing development permits.

Mine supporters and the administration of Alaska Governor Sean Parnell have objected to the EPA study. They argue that it is a prelude to development-stopping action by the EPA.

The president of the Pebble Limited Partnership on Friday called EPA's draft "rushed" and said it lacked "the level of rigor and completeness required for a scientific assessment."

"We believe it would be unprecedented and entirely inappropriate for the EPA to take steps to stop our project before it has been fully designed, before we have presented an environmental mitigation strategy designed to protect the fish and water resources of the area, before we have completed an economic benefits study and before we have submitted a permit application and started the rigorous permitting process," Pebble Partnership President John Shively said in a statement.

Pebble Mine opponents applauded EPA's efforts.

"What we have read so far suggests that EPA's draft findings regarding mining the Pebble deposit largely align with our own," said Jason Metrokin, chief executive of Bristol Bay Native Corp, in a statement. "The science exists now to show that the proposed Pebble mine does not fit with a sustainable future for Bristol Bay, and should not be allowed to proceed."

Oklahoma park accused of letting kids play with tigers

The Humane Society of the United States is accusing an Oklahoma exotic animal park of allowing children to handle and pose for photographs with juvenile tigers in what they called "a petting zoo for carnivores."

Joe Schreibvogel, owner of the G.W. Exotic Animal Park, 65 miles south of Oklahoma City, denies the allegations, and he said on Thursday that the humane society simply wants to bankrupt him.

Wayne Pacelle, head of the animal rights organization, contends that allowing visitors to handle the unpredictable felines placed the visitors at risk.

The Humane Society sent an undercover operative to work at the park last year to videotape what he saw, including children mingling with exotic cats that are too old to be safe playmates. The investigator witnessed or heard about six incidents in which tiger cubs bit or scratched park visitors, Pacelle said.

Schreibvogel said he plans to file animal cruelty charges against the humane society's undercover operative for failing to correct the alleged deficiencies in animal care described in his report, including an allegation that a bear had no water on a hot day last year.

"That was what he was trained and paid to do," Schreibvogel said. "We are on our way to the sheriff's office as soon as I hang this phone up."

Pacelle said he fears a disaster similar to one in Zanesville, Ohio, last year, when the owner of a private collection of 56 tigers, bears and other wild animals freed them from their cages and then shot himself to death. Authorities killed 49 of the beasts as they ran wild through the area.

U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesman David Sacks said an investigation is being conducted into the deaths of 23 tiger cubs at the Oklahoma park in 2009 and 2010.

This is the fourth time the agency has investigated the park and its owner for violations of the Animal Welfare Act, which protects warm-blooded animals that are displayed to the public for compensation, Sacks said.

In a 2006 agreed decision, Schreibvogel was fined $25,000 and had his exhibitor's license suspended for two weeks for deficiencies at his park.

Three-telescope interferometry allows astrophysicists to observe how black holes are fueled

ScienceDaily (May 16, 2012) ? By combining the light of three powerful infrared telescopes, an international research team has observed the active accretion phase of a supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy tens of millions of light years away, a method that has yielded an unprecedented amount of data for such observations. The resolution at which they were able to observe this highly luminescent active galactic nucleus (AGN) has given them direct confirmation of how mass accretes onto black holes in centers of galaxies.

"This three-telescope interferometry is a major milestone toward directly imaging the growth phase of supermassive black holes," said Sebastian Hoenig, a postdoctoral researcher at the UC Santa Barbara Department of Physics, and one of the astrophysicists who utilized this technique to observe the AGN at the center of galaxy NGC 3783. The observation was led by Gerd Weigelt, a director of the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany.

Hoenig described their findings as a ring of hot dust that marks the transition from a more-distant mixture of gas and dust in a toroidal (doughnut-shaped) structure, to a gaseous disk closer to the black hole. The dusty part, he said, is interesting because it dominates the infrared emission of active galactic nuclei and can be easily observed.

However, observing the ring of hot dust in NGC 3783 was a challenge for the astrophysicists. Not only is the ring distant and faint, but the ability of individual infrared telescopes to resolve distances between actively accreting objects is also highly limited. Even the largest optical/infrared telescopes in the world, the Keck telescopes, were not powerful enough, though they can show objects in the infrared comparable to about the size of a football field at the distance of the moon.

"In order to spatially resolve the accretion process onto supermassive black holes in nearby galaxies, we have to be at least a factor of ten better," said Hoenig. To achieve that angular resolution in a single telescope, it would have to be 130 meters in diameter.

However, by using the AMBER interferometry instrument to simultaneously combine the light from three 8-meter telescopes at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, the research team was able to achieve the angular resolution needed to observe the hot dust ring. The Paranal Observatory is operated by the European Southern Observatories (ESO).

The combination of the light from the three telescopes was no small feat, as the tiny differences in the arrival of light in the individual telescopes have to undergo constant correction with an accuracy of a few micrometers -- roughly ten times smaller than the thickness of a hair, according to Hoenig.

"The ESO VLTI provides us with a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of active galactic nuclei," said lead researcher Weigelt. "It allows us to study fascinating physical processes with unprecedented resolution over a wide range of infrared wavelengths. This is needed to derive physical properties of these sources."

Up next for the research team, which also includes astrophysicists from the universities of Florence, Grenoble, and Nice, will be the continued accumulation of information from additional observations toward a highly detailed image of the active galactic nucleus at galaxy NGC 3783.

"Our main interest is to learn how supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies are fueled, so that they grow to the enormous million to billion solar mass objects we see today," said Hoenig.

Monaghan Post ? Going Green Along with Commercial Real Estate

Getting a facility which adheres for you to green building standards and performance efficiency is a brilliant and accountable decision. When contemplating the value energy-efficient and environmentally friendly buildings can bring to the commercial real estate market, it seems as if becoming environmentally friendly is the brightest of assets. The practice of ?going green? has become gaining popularity in the last decade.

Society as a whole changed the way it sees building, living and working. That?s why living along with building ?green? is a lot more attractive than in the past to each residential and commercial property investors. Green building design experts can help a new facility get to its efficiency goals. Environmentally friendly design can easily alleviate minimizing exposure to dangerous materials, as well as ensure the efficiency of non-renewable materials and energy.

When it comes to green service construction, a natural design consultant will make sure your building process reduces the ecological impact to construct as well as supervise the construction to guarantee the protection involving local drinking water, soil, atmosphere, plants along with wildlife. When making a green service, it is important to consider the lifestyles of people who will be with all the building. Guarantee the facility offers support involving transportation choices, such as strolling, mass transit, biking along with alternative energizes. Incorporating design and style features that will make it easier for individuals who employ non-traditional transportation can be a responsible along with modern need.

Of course, you need to utilize non-renewable power and recycled, environmentally friendly materials in your building. Many fantastic decorations along with practical applications can be made out of your abundance involving recycled plastic along with rubber. Plastic material and rubber are extremely resilient, but not very environmentally friendly. It is just a wise substitute for use the recycled plastic and rubber, however, because otherwise it could end up using a land fill for thousands of years. As well as, by using recycled materials, the idea eliminates the need to create brand new, un-degradable plastic.

It may seem that becoming environmentally friendly and increasing building performance efficiency might cost a lot of money. While this has become the case before, it is becoming a lot more cost effective. The truth is, green design and style and building often costs the same as standard building approaches. And with all the money that can be stored through efficiency and recycling, green building can actually cost far less as compared to traditional methods over the long run. Businesses and businesses are far more prone to invest in a green building should they know it increases their main point here.

If you take into account the long-term maintenance and costs, using green and efficient goods and designs may significantly enhance profitability. Since green building continues to recognition, tax incentives will increase. It is easy see how green design and construction covers itself because times proceeds.

?How the Mortgage Acts & Practices? Rules Affect Real Estate Agents

?

Part 2:? Commercial Communications

?

(TheNicheReport) ? In the very first article regarding the Mortgage Acts & Practices rules, I mentioned that this new advertising rule now applies to everyone involved in selling and marketing one- to four-family, owner-occupied homes.? In addition to Realtors? and mortgage companies, it also includes ad agencies, lead-generation companies and telemarketers.?

?

The Mortgage Acts & Practices rules have been in effect since August 19, 2011?so it?s been around for a while, but not many people know about it?YET!

?

A large part of the rule explains ?definitions? and what they mean.? And the biggie here is the Fed?s definition of ?commercial communications?? or the various ways real estate agents and loan officers communicate with potential home buyers.?

?

Why would you care?? Because the rule states that if you do place an ad that includes mortgage terms, you must keep a written or electronic version of it for 24 months, in case you are ever audited.?

?

Here?s what is meant by the term ?Commercial Communications?:?

?

  • Any written or oral statement
  • Illustrations such as charts and graphs
  • English or any other language
  • Labels
  • Packages
  • Package inserts
  • Radio
  • Television
  • Cable TV
  • Brochures
  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Pamphlets
  • Leaflets
  • Circulars
  • Mailers
  • Book inserts
  • Free-standing inserts
  • Letters
  • Catalogues
  • Billboards
  • Posters
  • Public transit cards
  • Point-of-purchase displays
  • Film
  • PowerPoint slides
  • Audio transmitted over the telephone
  • Telemarketing scripts
  • On-hold scripts
  • Upsell scripts
  • Training materials provided to telemarketing firms
  • Infomercials
  • Internet
  • Cellular phones/networks
  • Web pages
  • Email
  • Direct mail
  • In-person sales presentation
  • ?anything else considered ?commercial communication?

To further clarify record keeping,

  • You must keep copies of all advertising if ?materially different.??
    • If the same/similar ad runs in different areas, only one copy is required, but also a list of places where ad placed
    • Description of mortgage products offered to consumers
      • Including terms, conditions and any ?unique
names? given to the mortgage loan
      • Details of affiliated products, i.e., life/disability insurance?
        • If a home warranty is REQUIRED as part of the home purchase, it can be interpreted that this may also apply.??

Just a heads up?the two federal agencies assigned the task of enforcing these rules are the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau and Federal Trade Commission.

?

Here?s the info if you?d like to read more about it (or you need help falling asleep): Federal Register, FTC 16 CRF Part 321

?

Next month we will outline the 19 ?Prohibited Practices.??

?

Correction to the February issue article called Advertising Rules (Reg Z) for Mortgage for Realtors/Builders Part 1: the disclosure rules apply if real estate agent co-advertises with a lender.? However, check with your state?s regulators because some states require Reg Z disclosure?even if you are not advertising in conjunction with a mortgage company. The Mortgage Acts & Practice rules in this article covers unfair and deceptive practices and plugs the loop holes that are not covered by Reg Z.

Travolta's lawyer: My client is vindicated

By Msnbc.com staff and wire

Updated at 6:30 p.m. PT: One of the two male masseurs who accused John Travolta of sexual assault has dropped his lawsuit, Reuters reported Tuesday.?

The unidentified man, referred to as John Doe No. 1, who claimed that the Hollywood star groped him during a massage session in Beverly Hills in January, filed a notice of dismissal with federal court in Los Angeles.?

The man was reported last week to have said he got the wrong date of the alleged incident after photos and restaurant receipts surfaced putting the "Grease" actor in New York on the same day.?

"The case has been dismissed, but that doesn't mean it can't be refiled," the plaintiff's attorney, Okorie Okorocha, told Reuters.?

The court incident comes one day after a?fourth massage therapist came forward?with sexual misconduct allegations against Travolta.

Okorocha said he will still be going ahead with the lawsuit against Travolta, representing a second unidentified man, John Doe No. 2, who claimed that Travolta rubbed his leg, touched his genitals and tried to initiate sex at a private appointment inside an Atlanta hotel on Jan. 28.?

Travolta's lawyer Martin Singer has vehemently denied the allegations in the two lawsuits, calling them "absurd and ridiculous."?

"My client is completely vindicated by Doe No. 1 dropping his claims and dismissing his lawsuit," Singer said in a statement to E! News. "We fully expect that my client will similarly be vindicated with respect to Doe No. 2, as well as with respect to any other person who makes meritless claims against John Travolta."

Travolta, 58, has been married to actress Kelly Preston since 1991. He found international claim with the movies "Grease" and "Saturday Night Fever" in the 1970s, before going on to grittier roles in "Pulp Fiction".?

Another male massage therapist makes claims that the actor displayed inappropriate behavior, NBC Buzz reports.

Sony gives VAIO S and Z Series Ivy Bridge upgrade, outs two new VAIO E models

Sony began introducing its new Ivy Bridge lineup last month with the VAIO E Series 14P, a multimedia laptop complete with gesture controls. Today, the company announced two larger models to round out that family, the VAIO E Series 15 and 17. Unlike the 14P, these notebooks don't come with Ivy Bridge power, but then their larger displays (15.5 inches and 17.3 inches, respectively) and an optional Blu-ray player on the larger model should be enough to tell you that these are entertainment-focused machines rather than next-gen powerhouses. Both the VAIO 15 and 17 run Intel Core i5-2450M CPUS and handle graphics with a AMD Radeon 7650M GPU and either 1GB or 2GB of VRAM depending on the model. Each also has a 750GB hard drive spinning at 5,400 RPM, plus a built-in webcam, USB 3.0 with a sleep-charge feature, HDMI, Bluetooth and WiFi. The main difference between the two is screen resolution: while the 15.5-incher sports a 1366 x 768 display, the 17.3-inch version has a more brilliant 1600 x 900 pixels. Pricing info is still MIA.

While the VAIO E 15 and 17 didn't make the Ivy Bridge cut, Sony's business-focused VAIO S and VAIO Z lines will get the processor update. The VAIO S will be available in 13.5- and 15.5-inch flavors, each sporting backlit keyboards and a thin design featuring aluminium, magnesium or carbon fiber (depending on the model). While the 13.3-incher's display resolution is yet to be determined, the 15.5-inch model will ship with a 1080p IPS screen. And while we simply know that the VAIO S 13 will come with a choice of Core i5 or Core i7 processors, the VAIO S 15 runs a Intel Core i7-3612QM with 8GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU (along with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 chip). On the storage side, the 15 has a 1TB hard drive. Both the VAIO S 13 and 15 will have SSD options, and Sony will offer a separate sheet battery for up to 14 hours of longevity. Weight-wise, the outlet is short on specifics, though both models will tip in at less than 4.4 pounds.

'Survivor: One World': Why Kim Deserved To Win

'Kim is a beast and anybody who doesn't think so is a fool,' runner-up Sabrina Thompson tells MTV News of the final 'Survivor' outcome.
By Josh Wigler

Kim Spradlin

"Survivor" does not always have a happy ending. All too often, the player who fought the hardest and played the best game winds up in the second- or third-place seat because of a bitter jury unable to look past their own fate on the road to the million bucks.

Of all the "Survivor: One World" contestants, only one played a near-perfect game: Kim Spradlin, the 29-year-old bridal shop owner who won the Sole Survivor title on last night's season finale. But victory was far from guaranteed. Not only did she go up against her two fiercest competitors in the final tribal council, Kim also was the clear-cut mastermind of the season, the one who engineered nearly every single juror's exit — the perfect setup for the aforementioned "bitter jury syndrome."

But the jury wasn't bitter. Far from it: Kim won the game decisively, missing out on only two of the nine jury votes. What was it about the blue-eyed Texan that convinced the jury to vote in her favor in spite of her ruthless gameplay?

"Let's just be honest here: the game is called 'Survivor,' " fourth-place finisher Christina Cha told MTV News at the "Survivor: One World" finale. "Who outwitted, outlasted and outplayed everyone? It was Kim. Hands down. Which is why I voted for her!"

Even special education teacher Alicia Rosa, one of Kim's closer allies throughout the game, cast her vote in the winner's favor, despite being gloriously betrayed by her days earlier.

"I do understand that it's a game. But she's an awesome person," Alicia said of why Kim deserved to win despite her own personal betrayal. "I know it's a game and people get nasty for a million dollars, but I'm not going to hold that against her. I'm super proud of her."

Kim's dominance over "One World" was so apparent to everyone, in fact, that even her final two competitors — Brooklyn-based teacher Sabrina Thompson and southern belle Chelsea Meissner — feel totally fine with the final outcome.

"Kim is a beast, and anybody who doesn't think that is a fool," said Sabrina. "I called her the Julia Roberts of the island. She's a beast in the challenges. And she has this amazing ability to look through you and tell you the sky is red, and you'll just go, 'Yes! The sky is red!' I think she's a lovable person and she has the physical game to go along with it. She's the perfect package."

"I could not be more happy or proud for Kim," added Chelsea, who was Kim's closest ally and friend throughout the game. "She definitely deserves it. She played one hell of a game. I think it ended how it should have."

The company is?launching a beta version of its web-based utility today that lets users upload then broadcast any number of files. Those files immediately become available to anyone within a 15-mile radius and can be searched for either by proximity or by a Doccaster ID (similar to a Twitter ID).
