Former MVP Branch in the background of Patriots offense (Reuters)

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) ? He is a double Super Bowl winner and seven years ago was named the Most Valuable Player in the National Football League's ultimate game but Deion Branch rarely gets a mention from pundits surveying the New England Patriots' offense.

Quarterback Tom Brady has such an abundance of quality options in wide receiver Wes Welker and tight-ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernendez, that the contribution of Branch is often overlooked.

Not that the 32-year-old, now in his second spell with the Patriots, is bothered by the absence of plaudits.

"No, that's cool. I just do my job. I can't worry about who is controlling and who's saying A, B, C, D. I just do my job. I'm not here to be the one that says, 'Hey I need all the attention.' That's not me," he told reporters as he prepared for Sunday's clash with the New York Giants.

The attention has primarily been focused on the Patriots' heavy use of their tight-ends with Brady looking increasingly to inside routes rather than out wide.

It is a very different approach to the one Brady took with Branch seven years ago, against the Philadelphia Eagles, when he tied a Super Bowl record with 11 catches for 133 yards and became the first wide-receiver since 1989 to win the MVP award.

When the Patriots lined up against the Giants at the end of the 2007 season, Randy Moss was the main target for Brady and Branch had moved on, to the Seattle Seahawks, after contract extension talks faltered and he was traded.

When Ross was released in October 2010, the Patriots had no hesitation in turning back to Branch, bringing him back from Seattle after more than four years away.

DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGY

Given the stability in the Patriots coaching personnel it was not hard for Branch to re-adjust to being back under the control of head coach Bill Belichick.

"I think it was pretty smooth. There was a lot of different terminology. Some of the terminology was a little different, but there were bits and pieces that I remembered from the past that once I started hearing it, I knew exactly what it was.

"I would say the transition wasn't as hard when you're used to playing with a certain guy, playing with Tom," he said.

"I was excited, very honored, and blessed to have the opportunity to come back to the same team that drafted me. Guys don't get the opportunity to go through that phase. I was just very thankful."

Branch's numbers do not stand out - 702 yards on 51 receptions this season - but they have to be seen as part of a multi-pronged offense.

Welker, with 1,569 yards from 122 receptions, is ranked the number one wide-receiver in the league while Gronkowski (1,327 yards, 90 receptions) and Hernandez (910 yards, 79 receptions) are among the top five most productive tight ends in the league.

"I can't speak for anyone else's recognition, but from my standpoint and the team's standpoint, I think everyone knows how important Deion is to our to our football team, to our offense and our passing game," said Belichick.

"He does a lot of things. He handles a lot of different responsibilities as far as where he lines up, his position and his assignments," he added, highlighting Branch's blocking abilities as well as his great understanding with Brady.

Branch also has a role before Sunday's game in transmitting his experience from previous Super Bowls to his team mates playing in their first.

"I think overall the only thing I will say that I'm really treating (differently) is I truly enjoy sharing the knowledge with the younger guys in our group and talking to the guys about the experience in the past," he said.

With pipeline to US on hold, Canada eyes China

The latest chapter in Canada's quest to become a full-blown oil superpower unfolded this month in a village gym on the British Columbia coast.

Here, several hundred people gathered for hearings on whether a pipeline should be laid from the Alberta oil sands to the Pacific in order to deliver oil to Asia, chiefly energy-hungry China. The stakes are particularly high for the village of Kitamaat and its neighbors, because the pipeline would terminate here and a port would be built to handle 220 tankers a year and 525,000 barrels of oil a day.

But the planned Northern Gateway Pipeline is just one aspect of an epic battle over Canada's oil ambitions ? a battle that already has a supporting role in the U.S. presidential election, and which will help to shape North America's future energy relationship with China.

It actually is a tale of two pipelines ? the one that is supposed to end at Kitamaat Village, and another that would have gone from Alberta to the Texas coast but was blocked by the Obama administration citing environmental grounds.

    1. Poll: Romney leads Gingrich in Fla.
    2. Fast food goes around-the-clock
    3. Artists lend their voices to airport PSAs
    4. After teen hockey injuries, safety push gains support
    5. US coupon craze turns to medical care
    6. Romney uses 'history,' surrogates against Gingrich
    7. Meet 'Rosie' and 'Ken': 2 chimps, many experiments

Those same environmental issues are certain to haunt Northern Gateway as the Joint Review Panel of energy and environmental officials canvasses opinion along the 731 mile route of the Northern Gateway pipeline to be built by Enbridge, a Canadian company.

The fear of oil spills is especially acute in this pristine corner of northwest British Columbia, with its snowcapped mountains and deep ocean inlets. People here still remember the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989, and oil is still leaking from the Queen of the North, a ferry that sank off nearby Hartley Bay six years ago.

Story: GOP tries new strategy to get Canada pipeline

The seas nearby, in the Douglas Channel, "are very treacherous waters," says David Suzuki, a leading environmentalist. "You take a supertanker that takes miles in order to stop, (and) an accident is absolutely inevitable."

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada's national interest makes the $5.5 billion pipeline essential. He was "profoundly disappointed" that U.S. President Barack Obama rejected the Texas Keystone XL option but also spoke of the need to diversify Canada's oil industry. Ninety-seven percent of Canadian oil exports now go to the U.S.

"I think what's happened around the Keystone is a wake-up call, the degree to which we are dependent or possibly held hostage to decisions in the United States, and especially decisions that may be made for very bad political reasons," he told Canadian TV.

Gingrich attacks
Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich quickly picked up the theme, saying that Harper, "who, by the way, is conservative and pro-American ... has said he's going cut a deal with the Chinese ... We'll get none of the jobs, none of the energy, none of the opportunity."

He charged that "An American president who can create a Chinese-Canadian partnership is truly a danger to this country."

But the environmental objections that pushed Obama to block the pipeline to Texas apply equally to the Pacific pipeline, and the review panel says more than 4,000 people have signed up to testify.

The atmosphere has turned acrimonious, with Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver claiming in an open letter that "environmental and other radical groups" are out to thwart Canada's economic ascent.

He said they were bent on bogging down the panel's work. And in an unusually caustic mention of Canada's southern neighbor, he added: "If all other avenues have failed, they will take a quintessential American approach: Sue everyone and anyone to delay the project even further."

Environmentalists and First Nations (a Canadian synonym for native tribes) could delay approval all the way to the Supreme Court, and First Nations still hold title to some of the land the pipeline would cross, meaning the government will have to move with extreme sensitivity.

Alberta has the world's third-largest oil reserves after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela: more than 170 billion barrels. Daily production of 1.5 million barrels from the oil sands is expected to increase to 3.7 million in 2025, which the oil industry sees as a pressing reason to build the pipelines.

Critics, however, dislike the whole concept of tapping the oil sands, saying it requires huge amounts of energy and water, increases greenhouse gas emissions and threatens rivers and forests. Some projects are massive open-pit mines, and the process of separating oil from sand can generate lake-sized pools of toxic sludge.

Meanwhile, China's growing economy is hungry for Canadian oil. Chinese state-owned companies have invested more than $16 billion in Canadian energy in the past two years, state-controlled Sinopec has a stake in the pipeline, and if it is built, Chinese investment in Alberta oil sands is sure to boom.

"They (the Chinese) wonder why it's not being built already," said Wenran Jiang, an energy expert and professor at the University of Alberta.

In a report on China's stake in Canadian energy, Jiang notes that if every Chinese burned oil at the rate Americans do, China's daily consumption would equal the entire world's.

Harper is set to visit China next month. After Obama first delayed the Keystone pipeline in November, Harper told Chinese President Hu Jintao at the Pacific Rim summit in Hawaii that Canada would like to sell more oil to China, and the Canadian prime minister filled in Obama on what he said.

Jiang reads that to mean "China has become leverage."

But oil analysts say Alberta has enough oil to meet both countries' needs, and the pipeline's capacity of 525,000 barrels a day would amount to less than 6 percent of China's current needs.

"I don't think U.S. policymakers view China's investment in the Canadian oil sands as a threat," says David Goldwyn, a former energy official in the Obama administration.

"In the short term it provides additional investment to increase Canadian supply; that's a good thing. Longer-term, if Canadian oil goes to China, that means China's demand is being met by a non-OPEC country, and that's a good thing for global oil supply. Right now we are spending an awful lot of time finding ways for China to meet its demand from some place other than Iran. Canada would be a great candidate."

Pipelines are rarely rejected in Canada, but Murray Minchin, an environmentalist who lives near Kitamaat Village, says this time he and other opponents are determined to block construction. "They are ready to put themselves in front of something to stop the equipment," Minchin said. "Even if it gets the green light it doesn't mean it's getting done."

Native communities offered 10 percent ownership
Enbridge is confident the pipeline will be built and claims about 40 percent of First Nation communities living along the route have entered into a long-term equity partnership with Enbridge. The communities together are being offered 10 percent ownership of the pipeline, meaning those which sign on will share an expected $400 million over 30 years.

But of the 43 eligible communities, only one went public with its acceptance and it has since reneged after fierce protests from its members.

Janet Holder, the Enbridge executive overseeing the project, says pipeline leaks are not inevitable, new technologies make monitoring more reliable, and tugboats will guide tankers through the Douglas Channel.

At the Kitamaat hearings, speakers ranged from Ellis Ross, chief of the Haisla First Nation in British Columbia, to Dieter Wagner, a German-born Canadian, retired scientist and veteran sailor who called the Douglas Channel "an insane route to take."

Ross used to work on whale-watching boats, and refers to himself as a First Nation, a term applicable to individuals as well as groups. He testified that the tanker port would go up just as marine life decimated by industrial pollution was making a comeback in his territory.

He held the audience spellbound as he described an extraordinary nighttime encounter last summer with a whale that was "logging" ? the half-doze that passes for sleep in the cetacean world.

"...Midnight I hear this whale and it's right outside the soccer field. ... It's waterfront, but I can hear this whale, and I can't understand why it's so close, something's got to be wrong.

"So I walk down there with my daughter, my youngest daughter, and I try to flash a light down there, and quickly figured out it's not in trouble, it's sleeping. It's resting right outside our soccer field.

"You can't imagine what that means to a First Nation that's watched his territory get destroyed over 60 years. You can't imagine the feeling."

Sprint Galaxy Nexus registration page gets served up by Google

Good news is here for folks on Sprint who've been anxiously waiting for a first taste of LTE connectivity and Ice Cream Sandwich. Google's official Galaxy Nexus website has quietly gone live with a registration section for anyone on the Now Network who wants to be notified when the device goes up for sale. If you'll recall, the pre-release version of Sprint's GNex that we spent time with at CES notably retained access to Google Wallet, and was apparently free of any crapware (unlike Verizon's variant). Aside from that -- and a Sprint logo -- it's essentially the same 32GB device you've come to know in the US. There's still no word on pricing just yet, but if you've got to be among the first to know, hit up the source link below.

(AP) ? (AP) ? Drew Gooden scored 23 points and the undermanned Milwaukee Bucks made sure the Lakers' road struggles continued, beating Los Angeles 100-89 on Saturday night.

Kobe Bryant scored 27 for the Lakers, who are 1-7 on the road this season.

Ersan Ilyasova and Mike Dunleavy added 15 points each for the Bucks, who managed to beat the Lakers without two of their best players.

Already scrambling to compensate for the long-term absence of injured center Andrew Bogut, the Bucks found themselves without guard/forward Stephen Jackson on Saturday because of an NBA suspension.

Bryant made six free throws to break Jerry West's franchise record for free throws made. Coming into Saturday's game, Bryant needed three makes to tie West's mark of 7,160.

Bryant also came closer to becoming the Lakers' career leader in field goals made. He was 10 of 21 from the floor Saturday, leaving him three short of the 13 field goals he needed to tie Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's franchise record of 9,935 field goals made.

Even without Bogut and Jackson, the Bucks were in control most of the way. Ilyasova hit a jumper at the horn to end the third quarter, and the Bucks took an 80-73 lead into the fourth.

The Bucks led 85-76 after an inside score from Ilyasova with just under eight minutes left, but Bryant scored five straight points to cut the lead to four.

But Luc Richard Mbah a Moute hit a jumper, then Gooden scored on a turnaround hook shot and hit a pair of free throws to run the lead back to 91-81.

Andrew Bynum scored inside, but Dunleavy hit a long jumper to give the Bucks a 93-83 lead with just over two minutes left.

After Bryant made a pair of free throws, Dunleavy drilled a 3-pointer to put the game away with 1:24 left.

The Bucks managed the beat the Lakers without Jackson, whose suspension was announced a few hours before the game.

The NBA suspended Jackson one game for verbal abuse of a game official and failure to leave the court in a timely manner at the end of the Bucks' 107-100 loss at Chicago on Friday night.

It's another rough moment for Jackson, who was benched by coach Scott Skiles in the Bucks' Jan. 20 game at the New York Knicks.

Bogut, meanwhile, fractured his left ankle in Wednesday's game at Houston and is expected to miss eight to 12 weeks ? a crushing blow for Milwaukee.

Without Bogut, the undersized Bucks faced a tough test from the Lakers' pair of 7-footers: Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

But they held their ground on defense early on, taking a 51-43 lead at halftime. The Bucks forced the Lakers into 10 turnovers in the first half, and limited Gasol to six points on 3 for 10 shooting.

Gasol finished the game with 12 points and 15 rebounds, but was 6 for 18 from the floor.

Lakers rookie guard Andrew Goudelock scored 13 points despite being hospitalized for dehydration overnight. Goudelock was coming off his best performance of the year, having scored a career-high 14 points against the Clippers on Wednesday.

Angie Bain: Gay Divorce: How the Collaborative Family Law Model Can Help Parting LGBT Couples

One of the many unjust results of a state legal system that refuses to recognize and validate a same-sex marriage or civil union is the absence of a binding structure and system for dissolving a fractured same-sex couple. LGBT couples typically have many, if not all, of the same legal issues to confront. How is custody of their children shared? How is their shared property divided? Who must help to support whom when the union ends? As a practicing family lawyer who has been married for 36 years, I have often reflected on how legally imposed rules and structure can support and preserve a marriage. And those of us active in the legal world of family law are constantly reminded that "the law" significantly lags behind the realities of modern human society. When our college-age son came out as a proud gay man to his family, I became keenly interested in exploring ways a same-sex couple can strengthen their union by preparing for the worst: a dissolved union.

Because my state, Texas, like so many others, obdurately refuses to validate and regulate same-sex marriage or civil unions and their occasional terminations, I recommend that LGBT couples reach as many binding agreements as possible when they embark on their lives together. Property ownership and financial obligations can be made binding by a cohabitation contract, much like the premarital and post-marital agreements so many heterosexual couples employ in this age. Parents may be given equal rights and duties to their children, before a sad break-up, through adoption and/or parenting conservatorship agreements. Estate planning may be conducted. Progressive attorneys throughout the country are assisting the LGBT community to "work around" the backward state of the law in their communities, while engaging in the fight to systemically address the inequity. Meanwhile, how does the legal community assist same-sex couples when their relationship ruptures?

The emergence worldwide of the concept of collaborative family law offers an effective, if not ideal, process to both legally and contractually codify an intact family, thereby lessening the uncertainty of a possible split and creating legal equality in the relationship. And if the couple separates, particularly in a state that refuses to recognize same-sex marriage or civil unions, the collaborative law model is invaluable in offering structure and guidance to divorcing couples.

The collaborative law model emerged in the early '90s as an alternative to the litigation court process of divorce. Since that time, the movement has gone viral around the globe. At the core of the process is the contractual agreement, signed at the start of the dissolution, that the couple will not appear in court to seek court intervention. And, if one or the other wishes to do so, both parties must hire new lawyers, from different law firms, before taking their case to court. The beauty of this tenet is that all participants, legal counsel included, have financial incentive to collaborate and reach acceptable resolutions!

Interest-based negotiation is another fundamental principal of the collaborative model. Traditional litigation and settlement is based on positional bargaining. In a collaborative process we help the couple focus early on their true interests. For example, a litigating couple may argue about which person keeps the home. In this scenario, one person wins and the other loses. Maybe the true interest behind the position of wanting the home is the emotional need for the security of the nest and the fear of transition. A host of options may be developed to address such an interest, perhaps a transition time, financial help in buying another home, or trading investments for the home.

As the collaborative movement has grown worldwide, different approaches have developed. In my collaborative community we add two members to the team: a mental health professional and a financial professional. Both professionals are neutral and participate to help the couple and their lawyers collaborate at their highest level of reason and effectiveness. The mental health professional helps everyone navigate the waters of loss, grief, and anger, emotions that usually permeate financial and parental decisions. The neutral financial professional participates in helping to gather and interpret financial information and fashion creative solutions.

From the straightforward to the complex family law issue, the steps of a collaborative process are simple and highly successful, if taken, in reaching agreements. First, the couple identifies their true goals and interests. Second, all the relevant information needed to make a decision is gathered and shared. Third, options for settlement are generated. It is important not to prejudge options, as doing so limits the creativity of the group. Finally, options are evaluated until an agreement is reached by the participants. The professional team of attorneys and mental health and financial professionals guides the couple throughout all the steps without imposing their personal judgments on the options generated. Unlike litigation, the words "I'm not going to let my client agree to that" are eliminated from the discussion. Same-sex couples are perhaps better suited to the collaborative law model than their heterosexual friends, as same-sex couples tend to share power better, fight more fairly, and remain more upbeat in the face of conflict and adversity.

I have heard the joke that of course same-sex couples should be allowed to marry: why should heterosexuals be the only people inflicted with divorce lawyers?! I say that through the collaborative family law model, same-sex couples have the chance to model for heterosexuals the most positive, productive, and practical way of planning for facing family law issues.

Private sector unions add members as jobs return

(AP) ? Union membership grew slightly last year, giving labor leaders hope that a period of steep declines has finally bottomed out.

The number of unionized workers increased by about 50,000 to nearly 14.8 million members in 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. The increase comes after unions lost nearly 1.4 million members over the previous two years.

Still, unions' share of the overall workforce fell, from 11.9 percent to 11.8 percent, as state and local governments trimmed thousands of jobs to address budget shortfalls. That's the lowest percentage of union workers since the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Unions saw losses of about 61,000 workers in government employment. But they grew by 110,000 workers in the private sector, mainly in construction and health care. Despite that growth, unions still represent just 6.9 percent of all workers at private companies, unchanged from 2010.

"The devastating losses from 2009 and 2010 have stopped and that's got to be good news for the labor movement," said John Schmitt, a senior economist with the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington.

Schmitt said another positive for unions is that private sector membership grew at about the same rate as overall job growth.

Union membership has declined steadily from its peak of about a third of all workers in the 1950s, and about 20 percent in 1983. The losses have been especially steep in private industry with the loss of manufacturing jobs that traditionally are heavily unionized.

"It is telling that as our country begins to recover the jobs lost during the Great Recession, good union jobs are beginning to come back," said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

As private sector union membership eroded, labor leaders turned increasingly toward workers in state and local governments, where there was often less resistance to organizing. About 7.6 million employees in the public sector belonged to a union last year, compared with 7.2 million union workers in the private sector. And public-sector workers had a union membership rate of 37 percent, more than five times that of private-sector workers.

But future public sector growth in union membership is in doubt.

States and municipalities laid off tens of thousands of workers to balance their budgets after tax revenues plummeted because of the recession. Public sector unions also have faced growing hostility from GOP legislatures in Wisconsin, Ohio and other states that have tried to curb collective bargaining rights.

Florida saw the largest increase in union members last year, up 68,000, followed by Michigan, a 44,000 increase as auto industry employment surged. Union membership fell most sharply in New York, down 53,000.

New York remains the most heavily unionized state at 24 percent, while North Carolina has the lowest union rate at 2.9 percent.

Among full-time wage and salary workers, the median weekly earnings of union members was $938, compared to $729 for nonunion workers.

Race and Religion at the Ballot Box: Building a Better Bias Detector

News | Mind & Brain

A new method tries to tell whether prejudice plays into voting choices

Image: The Obama-Biden Transition Project

The color of a candidate?s skin failed to sway voters to depress the lever for either Obama or McCain in the 2008 election, immediate analyses of that contest seemed to suggest. Some pundits hailed it as the first postracial election.

But a closer look after the election has revealed a much more nuanced picture of that historic faceoff. It turns out that as many as a fifth of the voters cared about race more than other considerations like gender, endorsements by a local newspaper or a candidate?s political party.

A study by political scientist Brian F. Schaffner at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in the December issue of Political Psychology showed that concerns about race may have meant that Obama procured 3 percent less of the vote than he would have if he were white?enough to decide an election in a close race. ?It?s pretty clear that if Obama were white he would have done better than he did,? Schaffner says.

His finding echoes the results of similar probings by other researchers into the 2008 statistics. Schaffner?s work stands out, though, because of the care that he took in trying to figure out whether a voter was trying to mask biases about the hyper-sensitive issue of race. The researcher devised what he calls an ?unobtrusive observational measure? to try to elicit a voter?s real opinions.

Schaffner deployed a simple ranking method to get beyond what political scientists call ?social desirability bias:? voters? attempts to cover up opinions that they know might be repellent to others. After the election, Schaffner asked 934 respondents, 825 of whom voted, to rank the importance of six items from most to least helpful in making a decision.

Whites who placed race higher on the list, which included a candidate?s gender, occupation, political party and other factors, were less likely to vote for Obama, The definition of? ?higher? encompassed any ranking from first to fourth on the list, allowing the survey to detect the importance of race even if respondents didn?t rank that category first and may have wanted to hide their views.

These findings held up even after taking into account a measure of political conservatism, specifically, opposition to affirmative action. A white respondent who opposed affirmative action but put race last instead of fourth on the list was 25 percent more likely to vote for Obama. In the 2012 election, Schaffner wants to use the same method to examine, not only race, but this year?s added hot-button issue of Mitt Romney?s religion.

A well-known political blog, The Monkey Cage, raised the question of whether trying to deduce voters? recondite opinions was really needed. John Sides, a political scientist at George Washington University, noted that other studies had produced similar results even when asking respondents more directly about their racial prejudices. Schaffner defends his methodology, citing evidence from exit polls that indicates that social desirability bias really matters. ?If people are obscuring answers, that?s going to make it much more difficult to detect what the effect is of those answers,? he says.

Now that Beyoncé and Jay-Z have welcomed Blue Ivy Carter into the world, it's time to get back to work. In the days since Blue's birth, Jay has already released a track, "Glory," featuring his baby girl, making her the youngest person ever to appear on a Billboard chart. But for new mom Bey, the road back to headlining tours and music videos starts with getting her enviable physique back in tip-top shape.

Beyoncé is known for many things, and her bangin' body is right at the top of the list — hers was the bod that inspired a new word, "Bootylicious," after all. The pop superstar has always been the picture of health and happiness, and to celebrity trainer Jeanette Jenkins — who helped Pink and "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" star Paula Patton get back in shape after their pregnancies — that's half the challenge.

"Working out should have been a part of a new mom's regimen before she got pregnant, while she was pregnant, and for the rest of her life," Jenkins told MTV News. "It should be part of your daily life, just like brushing your teeth or combing your hair. It's your internal hygiene.

"The goal should not be to lose weight," she added. "The goal should be to live a healthy life, and by working out and eating healthy, you will be happy and the weight will just fall off because you are making healthy choices."

So, where should Beyoncé start in her quest to get her fantastic abs and toned legs back? With her doctor, according to Jenkins. "A new mother should first wait until she gets clearance from her doctor, and she can immediately start by making healthy food choices. Once a mother receives clearance from her doctor, then her starting point depends on her fitness level," Jenkins said. "A weekly workout regimen should include all of the components of fitness — cardio, flexibility, muscular strength and muscular endurance — for overall functional health and fitness and for maximum results."

Jenkins prescribes a strict training and diet program to her celebrity clients — a four- or five-day-a-week mix of cardio, endurance exercises like circuit training, and strength and flexibility training, including yoga and Pilates — but understands that the outcome will be more successful if the new mom is enjoying the regimen and has realistic expectations.

"A new mother has to eat healthy for herself and for her child, but she also has to live and have a good time too," Jenkins said. "From my experience, if you make healthy food choices 80 percent of the time and eat whatever you like 20 percent of the time, then you will have great results. I recommend to my clients to eat healthy Monday through Friday and then let go on the weekend and enjoy yourself."

The trainer also noted that, "When people are having a good time, they are more likely to stick to their program."

"The goal is to find activities and workouts that you enjoy so that you keep it a part of your life forever. Consistently mix it up, and enjoy working out," she advised. "Try yoga, Pilates, playing in the park with your kids, hiking and kickboxing."

She also recommended dancing, which we know Queen B has down to a science.

For those not lucky enough to have a personal trainer or unable to sneak away to the gym, Jenkins said, "A walk with the baby in a stroller is good enough. It will help a mother lose their extra baby weight by boosting metabolic rate and increasing caloric expenditure, but more importantly it will give you a boost of happy hormones so you feel great and it cleans out your internal organs, improving your body's pH balance and decreasing your risk of illness and disease."

For Jenkins, the keys to a successful workout program are progression and variety. "Training for peak condition is just like training an athlete for peak performance. It has to be done in a healthy progression to maximize results and decrease risk of injury," she added. "For the best weight-loss and toning results, it is important to train the entire body head to toe through all of the components of fitness with an emphasis on using the core at all times. It doesn't matter if she is power walking, doing yoga or cooking in the kitchen, the core needs to be consistently engaged. Always pull your navel to your spine."

Beyoncé reportedly maintained a healthy diet throughout her pregnancy, and just days before giving birth at New York's Lenox Hill Hospital was spotted looking "amazing" while dining out with her hubby in Brooklyn, New York. If she keeps up her tireless work ethic, there's reason to believe she'll be back in bootylicious shape in no time.

Italy extends rating agencies probe to Fitch (Reuters)

MILAN (Reuters) ? Italian police seized documents at Fitch's Milan offices on Tuesday as the rating agency was drawn into an investigation of alleged market manipulation already involving its two bigger rivals Standard & Poor's and Moody's (MCO.N).

The investigation follows a raft of sovereign downgrades for debt-laden Italy, the last one by S&P on January 13 -- part of its much-criticized mass downgrade of nine euro zone countries.

Fitch analysts have said they expect to cut their rating on Italy by up to two notches this month.

Financial police seized documents and emails at Fitch's offices, an investigative source said, less than a week after a similar operation at S&P's in Milan.

"Men from the financial police are at Fitch in Milan," Carlo Maria Capristo, chief prosecutor in Trani, told Reuters.

Trani prosecutor Michele Ruggiero, who is leading the investigation and was in Milan for the police operation, declined to comment when asked whether any documents had been seized.

An investigative source said that, after placing S&P and Moody's under investigation last year, the prosecutors had extended their probe to Fitch for alleged market manipulation and abuse of privileged information.

There was no immediate comment from Fitch.

A Fitch employee said: "It doesn't look serious to me."

European policymakers struggling to contain a debt crisis have grown increasingly critical of rating agencies, saying they have been too quick to downgrade indebted EU states despite bailouts and austerity programs.

U.S. authorities also reacted angrily when S&P stripped the United States of its cherished triple-A rating last August.

MARKET LOSSES

The Trani prosecutors began their investigation last year, alleging that reports by Standard & Poor's and Moody's on Italy and its banking system provoked sharp losses on the Milan stock market.

The probe was extended to S&P's decision to downgrade Italy earlier this month, and now to Fitch's threatened ratings cut.

S&P's Milan offices were searched on January 19 and visited again by prosecutor Ruggiero on Tuesday.

Last week's search order for S&P's offices, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, said S&P's downgrade of Italy's sovereign rating on January 13 was based on "untruthful, tendentious, incoherent and unfair" assessments and data.

It also said news of the imminent downgrade was leaked when markets were still open, adding the agencies' actions and reports on Italy caused "real damage to the financial market, with a slump in the share price of banks and/or of public debt."

S&P rejected the allegations.

"S&P did not divulge any of its own ratings decisions on the sovereign debt of European countries before the official release of January 13," it said, adding that none of the agency's controlling shareholders had had access to its data or reports before they were released in the public domain.

It also dismissed as groundless the prosecutors' assertion that its ratings decisions were based on incorrect information.

"The statement that S&P could have a political or economic agenda on Italy or on the euro zone is unfounded," it said.

Moody's has said it takes the dissemination of market sensitive information very seriously and is cooperating with authorities.

The probe in Trani, a small town in southern Italy, was opened after a complaint by two consumer groups over the market impact of S&P and Moody's reports about Italy.

The consumer groups have said they had first contacted prosecutors in Milan and Rome but had been turned down.

Judicial sources said Milan's chief prosecutor, who on Monday put out a statement to say his office was not investigating S&P in relation to its rating assessments, believed there was not enough information to warrant a probe.

An investigative source said the Trani prosecutors hoped to conclude their probe by the end of January.

Missouri Meth Problem Causes House GOP to Consider Stricter Drug Sales (ContributorNetwork)

Missouri already has a law on the books that requires purchases of over-the-counter cold medications to be monitored by scanning someone's driver's license. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Republicans in the Missouri House of Representatives have introduced a bill reducing the amount of pseudoephedrine consumers in Missouri can purchase per month and per year.

Here's a look at why the General Assembly is considering the legislation this year, based upon what Missouri's meth problem did in 2011.

Sheriff Busted for Dealing Meth

The New York Daily News reported in April that Tommy Adams was the sheriff of Carter County, a rural part of south central Missouri. He was arrested after two years on the job for trafficking meth.

Adams allegedly gave an informant the drug and then used it himself. He ran for sheriff in 2008 and won by a single vote when his Democratic opponent committed suicide two weeks before the election. Missouri officials became suspicious when meth raids fell dramatically in Adams' county, even though there has been a huge meth problem there in the past.

St. Charles County Requires Prescription

St. Charles County took matters into their own hands. Just west of St. Louis, St. Charles County required anyone within its borders to get a prescription for drugs containing pseudoephedrine beginning Aug. 30. The Columbia Missourian reported in late October that sales of the drugs increased in St. Louis County when the law went into effect.

Towns such as Bridgeton, Chesterfield and Maryland Heights all saw spikes in psuedoephedrine sales in September. That spike was attributed to citizens going to the next county over to get cold medication.

Meth Labs Top 2,100

Although official statistics have yet to be released, the Springfield News-Leader reports that meth lab busts in Missouri are expected to top 2,100 for 2011. That figure would push Missouri back into the number one state for meth production. Last year, the Show-Me State was second to Kentucky in meth busts after years of being in the top spot.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol will be looking to increase restrictions on ingredients for meth. This move comes even though drug companies are claiming cold medications will be taken away from law abiding citizens who simply want to get relief from cold and flu season.

Jefferson County's Situation

USA Today reports Jefferson County, just south of St. Louis, leads Missouri's meth lab busts. Through Nov. 28, that particular area of Missouri had 234 meth lab seizures of the official 1,744 busts across the state. That turns out to be over 13 percent of the statewide meth problem in just one county.

If the General Assembly passes the new bill introduced in the current session, new limits will be in place for the sale of pseudeoephedrine. Monthly limits in place now restrict consumers to purchasing nine grams of the drug per month and 108 grams per year. The new limits, if passed, would lower the monthly limit to 7.5 grams and the annual limit would be 75 grams. A measure last year to require a prescription state-wide passed the House but failed in the Missouri Senate.

Lessons in coral reef survival from deep time

Monday, January 23, 2012

Lessons from tens of millions of years ago are pointing to new ways to save and protect today's coral reefs and their myriad of beautiful and many-hued fishes at a time of huge change in the Earth's systems.

The complex relationship we see today between fishes and corals developed relatively recently in geological terms ? and is a major factor in shielding reef species from extinction, says Professor David Bellwood of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and James Cook University.

"Our latest research provides strong evidence for a view that today's coral hotspots are both a refuge for old species and a cradle for new ones," said Peter Cowman, lead author of a recent report. "This is the first real inkling we've had that just protecting a large area of reef may not be enough ? you have to protect the right sorts of reef."

Early coral reefs, 300-400 million years ago were much simpler affairs than today's colourful and complex systems, Prof. Bellwood says. The fish were not specialised to live on or among corals ? either lacking jaws altogether, or else feeding on detritus on the seabed or preying on one another.

"By 200 million years ago we are starting to see fish with jaws capable of feeding on corals, but the real explosion in reef diversity doesn't occur till about 50 million years ago when we see fishes very like today's specialist coral feeders emerging."

It is the ever-increasing complexity of this relationship between corals and fishes over the last 20 or 30 million years that produces the wondrous diversity of today's reefs, he says. Each has become more critical to the survival of the other as their lives have become more interwoven.

"When people think of coral reefs, they usually think of the beautiful branching corals like staghorn (Acropora) ? well the evidence is now fairly clear that Acropora needs certain fish for it to flourish. But, it now appears that this may be a reciprocal relationship with Acropora being important for the evolution and survival of fishes on coral reefs. "

Unfortunately Acropora corals are highly vulnerable to external impacts like Crown-of-Thorns starfish, coral bleaching, climate change and ocean acidification. Their demise will have far reaching effects on the fishes which interact with them, such as damsels, butterfly fish, cardinals and wrasses.

"The study of the past tells us that reefs are all about relationships and, like a family, for them to survive those relationships need to remain strong," Peter Cowman said.

"In coming years it is probable reefs will be subject to relentless presses that may cause them to change fundamentally. Those with the best long-term prospects of survival will be the ones where the relationships between fish and corals are healthiest.

Both fish and corals managed somehow to survive the five great mass extinction events of the past, though they sustained massive loss of species. Over time these have left us with a world focus of reef biodiversity centered on the Coral Triangle region to Australia's north, which in turn helps recharge Australian coral reefs, especially in the west.

"The Coral Triangle is currently subject to intensifying human and ecosystem pressure. The latest work by Peter Cowman and Prof Bellwood suggests it is both a cradle for new species and a refuge in troubled times ? so it is vital that it remain intact.

"This isn't about saving individual species or particular reefs, it's about maintaining the basic relationships which ensure the survival of the whole," says Prof Bellwood.

"We've had a 'heads up' from the past that is giving us fresh insights into what is most important on reefs and why we must protect our precious reefs and fishes into the future."

You can now circle the White House on Google+

By Rosa Golijan

Google

Considering that President Obama is on just about every major social media service, it should come as no surprise that there is now a Google+ account for the White House as well.

Deputy director of outreach for the office of digital strategy?? yowza, that's a long job title???Kori Schulman revealed this news on the White House blog on Friday.

"On day one, President Obama made clear that this Administration is committed to public engagement and participation," Schulman writes. "That?s why [this administration] launched the 'We the People' petitioning tool and why you can find the White House on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other places around the Web."

The newly created White House Google+ page?will be used?to share news from the official White House blog, behind the scenes photos, and videos, Schulman says.?In addition, there will be regular "White House Hangouts" with administration officials.?(Only some users will be invited to join these Hangouts, but everyone will be able to watch the entire events live on WhiteHouse.gov, the Google+ page or on the White House YouTube channel.)

Gingrich steals Romney's cloak of electability as president (Reuters)

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Reuters) ? Newt Gingrich didn't just beat Mitt Romney in Saturday's South Carolina primary, the former House speaker kicked away one of the main pillars of his rival's election campaign.

Exit polling data shows Gingrich convinced voters he would be the toughest Republican opponent against President Barack Obama in the November general election.

Electability - Republican campaign-speak for a candidate's ability to beat Obama - had been one of Romney's top selling points until Saturday.

Conventional wisdom was that the former Massachusetts governor's emphasis on jobs and the economy and his perceived appeal to independents would help him against Gingrich, who is often seen as erratic and divisive.

But Gingrich's combative style in debates resonated with voters keen for a heavyweight debater to take on Obama, who is grudgingly respected by Republicans as a formidable campaigner.

This may also be helping Gingrich's message on the economy gain traction, exit polling data showed.

South Carolina's Republicans rated the ability to beat Obama as a candidate's most important quality, an exit poll on CNN showed.

Forty-five percent of voters said that was the main attribute they sought in a nominee. Of that group, 51 percent voted for Gingrich compared to 37 percent for Romney.

Twenty-one percent of South Carolina voters said the quality that mattered most to them in their candidate was that he had the right experience.

"It is electability, and that is measured in your ability to effectively debate and prosecute your case against Obama," said Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak.

Exit polls also showed that for 63 percent of South Carolina voters the most important issue was the economy. Gingrich won this group by a margin of eight percentage points over Romney.

The attraction of Gingrich as an anti-Obama candidate may be the factor that increased his ratings on other issues like the economy, Mackowiak said.

Attacks on Obama in recent weeks, including dubbing him "a foodstamp president," endeared Gingrich to voters in a state with unemployment of almost 10 percent.

OLD TIMER WITH EXPERIENCE

"He is an old timer with a lot of political experience. He's the only one who can beat Obama," said Jim Walters, a retired marine owner in the town of Aiken.

Gingrich slammed Obama as "truly a danger to the country" in his South Carolina victory speech and promised to bring down Obama in a series of long debates.

A master of the sharp turn of phrase who talks in big broad sweeps, the former House speaker was the clear star of the more than 20 Republican debates in recent months.

He left Romney floundering, particularly during two televised contests in South Carolina this week where the millionaire former executive stumbled over questions about his personal finances.

Republican voters in South Carolina, a conservative state with a taste for rough and tumble politics, lapped it up.

"I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that people really want to see Newt debate Obama," Mackowiak said.

"It reminds me of gladiators. You see an amazing gladiator have a string of victories in the middle of the Coliseum so you really want to see him go up against the biggest, baddest gladiator there is."

In a sign that Gingrich's well-documented marital infidelities might have created a problem with female voters, exit polls showed Gingrich held an advantage over Romney of 16 points among men but only 9 points among women.
